Just remember, it's hardly ever like this!!
I'm not sure anything is as sunny as California, but the sun will shine in DC again.

My thoughts and prayers are with you guys. I hope it's not as bad as they foresee.

Are you prepared for periods of no electricity, if it comes to that? Flashlights? Car chargers? Are you guys lucky enough not to have sewer lift stations?

We prepared. Flashlights, non perishable food, tied down the yard stuff. Now, we wait.
We don't have sewer lift stations.
So far, so good.
Thanks :-)

Just moved from CA to DC area on Friday...I want to go back! I'm living in a house w/ an older lady who owns the house...she keeps telling me it's serious and telling me things I need to do...I need to move out...and we have to bail out the windows to the basement every hour so it doesn't flood...FML

I hope everyone is OK

And if you've lost power that you get it back soon.

I'm in NYC and it was pretty intense. We were on lockdown, all of downtown was flooded and no power. I live further uptown and we got lucky--it wasn't nearly as bad. NJ and Long Island got slammed. My parents have a house on eastern LI by the beach and they lost all power, trees were uprooted, etc.

The good news is I think we got over the worst and it's mostly just fine :).

It's funny how different people's experiences are!

I also am in NYC and I hardly knew anything had happened.

Of course when you watched tv and went to the news websites you realized that that flooding was fairly destructive-- and if you live downtown, below 39th St, it must still be quite awful, because there's no electricity, cellphone service, or heat. And of course there were a lot of branches blown off trees and other things like that. The worst of it was the fire in Queens and the explosion at the ConEd substation; also NYU Medical Center lost power and their back-up generators didn't go on, necessitating carrying patients down unlit staircases and into ambulances to be transferred to other hospitals.

I've heard that subway service, which was suspended, will begin tomorrow in earnest above about 39th St. (I'm in a higher part of the city)-- below which ConEd has turned off all power--. Bus service began again today-- and of course there are cabs. But the parts of the system that have been damaged will take a long time to repair-- which shows that any city can be vulnerable to an unexpectedly severe weather system.

It remains to be seen what, if anything, will be done to try to prevent future floods.

Hi Willful,

So true! I'm uptown, so like you, I didn't really see/feel the damage. It just felt like a really windy, rainy night. But for those downtown, it was a totally different story. And yes, the hospital situation was horrible.

I always think these storms are a lot of media hype, but when you watch the coverage, it's truly amazing how much destruction and subsequent issues it brought. I feel fortunate to have dodged the bullet.

As far as preventing future floods, it seems like we're becoming more aware and ideally prepared to deal with the damage based on the recent cycles of storms we've had. I hope.

Most of Westport/Norwalk CT still without power. The home next door to mine two homes from Westport still without power. Seems like inland had more fallen trees. Makes sense more grow there and my street and surrounding very wooded. Phillipa

Hello!
I have no power, no Internet and cell (at home), no heat. We have wires and a big tree down (didn't hit the house).
I saw the manhattan skyline last night... Lower manhattan in the dark, really something to behold. The biggest problem is/was the storm surge. Some areas just are devastated by flooding. The national guard is here.
Some people here have power, a lot don't. The lines for gas are ridiculous. Mass transit in NYC is nowhere close to functional, tunnels have flooded, it's going to be a while!
Cell service is spotty in the ny metro area. I still haven't heard from friends near the water. I just hope they weren't flooded.
Let us not do this again.

I'm glad things aren't worse for you. Please be careful.

That must have been a sight.

That's the part I'm having the most trouble imagining. I've known it *could* happen - even that eventually it certainly would - but that's not the same as seeing parts of Manhattan underwater. Not to mention all the other places.

I hope you hear from your friends soon.

Know that you have been missed here while you have had no power (and had way more important things to worry about).

Bad news about my friends though...
2 feet of water got into their house, big mess
I was hoping they'd be spared.

I doubt 2 generators will make much difference in the end. All the police required might however.

Anyone seen a map of actual flooded areas?

I'd especially like to see a street by street map (or list) of what flooded in NYC, especially outside of Manhattan.

Many videos on facebook. The protest that 2 huge generators that each could heat 400 homes had the people outraged. It will be below freezing more lives will be lost. Phillipa

I'm keeping those who are affected in my thoughts. We'll be donating to the Red Cross of course, but I wish there was something I could do.
