Welcome to babble. You may wish to also post this on meds. First are you on any meds? Phillipa

Does your son, or your family, have access to counseling? Someone who can look at things with a certain detachment?

Welcome!

People who have features of avoidant personality disorder, with or without depression, can grow and change a great deal with psychodynamic psychotherapy. the kind that seems to help the most is where there is a very good fit between you and your therapist, and you are receiving a lot of support and understanding as you learn more satisfying ways of relating to others. I would recommend that, if you haven't done it already. As you change and become more confident and interactive yourself, you will be helping your son. You didn't tell us too much about him, but it might be that he, too would benefit from this type of therapy. Good luck with whatever you try!
