Hi everyone,
My recent conversation with a relative who said I had been sick for years made me wonder...does anyone get better say after 4 or 5 years of being sick and not working? Does anyone ever go back to work after years away?
Thank you for any insight.

I'm sure they do. Many babblers work now even when on meds and with severe illnesses. Better would depend on the illness, circumstances of what caused it. Now you have me thinking. Phillipa

I just posted this on meds board in my own words and spelled your name wrong. Thought it was a great question. Hope you don't mind. If so apologizes in advance but you really got me thinking. Phillipa

I lost my job in 11/07,while in the midst of the worst breakdown Ive ever had. I had that job for 15 yrs. So now it's 2012,Im well, and I could definitely go back to work.Im much more assertive now,and anxiety free. However,Ive decided to just enjoy a few more years of my son being at home, and Im never bored. So I will stay out of the work force for now.Great question.Has me thinking as well.

And I should add that I never, ever thought I would be able to work again when I was depressed. But once I came out of it,I realized that I could indeed work or do anything normal people do.

Hi Phillipa,
No problem posting this on the other board.
Gadchik, seems we have been away from work for about the same time frame, only I'm not a mom so I have no excuse when it comes time to interview for jobs.
Thank you for your feedback...

my son is 19,goes to college, but lives at home.I dont think thats a great excuse, since he really doesnt need me around.Heck,he's not even home most of the time! But I do have a lap dog that would be devastated if I was gone 8hrs a day! I do help w/our business a little, though, from home.Tell me what happened to you,if you dont mind.

Hi Gadchik,
Thank you for your post. I'm similar to you in that I had a great work history before my "meltdown" which was about 4 or 5 years ago. (Depression.) Seems they still haven't found the right med cocktail to get me back to where I was.
So I have been volunteering here and there but that's about it...no paid work since '07.Roslynn

> Does anyone ever go back to work after years away?
Absolutely, yes.
I spent over 10 years trying to get back to a 9-5 type existence. But I found that I couldn't work to that schedule. In between work trials, I was totally disabled. But I kept trying to find a hole that matched my peg.
I recently came out of an episode of total disability, only to find that by reaching out to others on the internet, I found a job that I could manage.
My recovery is a wobbly thing, but I found a wobbly job.
I don't know that my experience can be illustrative, or not. But, I never gave up, even when I didn't know where I was going.
Hope, was always my fuel.

Larry, what sort of work do you do? How are the conditions different from a regular job?

Dear Larry,
Would it be possible for me to babblemail you? Please let me know. If not, no problem.
I would like to find out more about work trials.

I do research. I write reports. I give a balanced perspective on the subject in question. I get paid for it, which supplements disability supports. I report everything, so it's all cool.
I can do that when I'm housebound. I can not answer the phone for extended periods, and just saying I was busy is enough. No one knows if I had a shower, or when I got out of bed. Ya know?

"My recovery is a wobbly thing, but I found a wobbly job."
Love this Larry. My career fell apart at the same time the depression moved in for good and unpacked those bags.
I had a career in market research that I am pretty sure is dead now. While it was fizzling I did so much reaching out it was near humiliation.
Last summer took seasonal work as a tour guide on a double decker bus in nyc. Lucky to make in a week what I used to make in a day.
Now I'm taking a class to teach English as a foreign language.
It will be another very low paying job.
But I can't afford to not work (disability evaluated me as functioning under diminished capacity but employable)but more important I isolate isolate isolate.
Breaking the isolation even in the most superficial way can make a big difference.

Just read my post
erratic energy
moments of it when I am off medsThis one will be about you.
Yes, people do go back to work
Sometimes returning to a very different work worldI think it is best to have a coach or social worker or friend sit down with you and make lists of types of work, industries to work in and, most important, people you know who may be able to help you make connections. Play around with it.
Then a plan
Don't push yourself
And carefully consider how man hours a week would be best for yougood luck

Thank you,
