I would say new york times (nytimes.com) for me over washingtonpost. But I don't have a profound knowledge of many other newspapers. Is there a satirical newspaper in the US?
For UK newspapers the guardian maybe.

I like the NY Times best, but also like the Wall Street Journal.
Mostly I read blogs and online magazines like the New Republic, Slate, TPM, Huffpost, and, for fun Gawke. Plus lots of others now and then.

The Wall Street journal is owned by Murdoch. I mean, I haven't read it, it probably is (it probably was) a very nice paper.
I liked the New York Review of Books, the London Review of Books and Harpers. When I was in Nepal I even managed to read the Economist cover to cover.
The Sydney Morning Herald is not a bad paper.
I was reading the Australian (Murdoch again) the other day. Just propoganda of a certain sort.
I have not paid for a Murdoch newspaper since 1975 because of the way he used his papers to defeat the Whitlam government. It's not just that at all of course. Let's not mention Fox.

In Japan one of the English language papers (the name of which I forget) had a section from the New York Times. It was great.

When the events were unfolding in Egypt, I watched Al Jazeera.
