the last thread about the boys in the pub.there are still plenty of pubs ,but they are closeing at an alarming rate,my town had at least 20 pubs now there are about 10. the nightclubs about 6 but most only open at the weekend as people come from other parts for the binge drinking , supermarket beer prices are low an the threat of violence keeps older people from the town centre.in the week the pubs drop there prices in the afternoon as just to make ends meet an be able to pay staff wages ,so they dont loose them.say a number of pubs sell lets say coors beer at £1-60p a pint at lunch time an £3 at night. but for £8 you get a 24 pack in the supermarket,an with hd -tv,compact disc films , food of every nation bought to your door , the pubs die a death as people stay in, plus the no smoking ban killed the pubs , lots of guys like to go to the pub have a smoke , drink ,chat, now they have to go outside to smoke an the pubs let kids in to dine with there perants , so the the good old swearing, fighting, drinking, smoking, pub is no more.

phillipa , there not just for men, i was talking a male tradition, jesus women are bigger piss heads than us guys, they fight more than the men to, there open about sex an if they want a guy they go for it , good for them, the uro imigrant,s spoilt the pubs as well , there no match in a fist fight with the locals, so they pull knives an even guns,an as i have said in a previous post rape by imigrants is out of control. there no used to seeing british girls with well lets say they dont wear much ,an if they carnt have them they take them ,the backlash in my town is boiling

Too right, and if people who want to work in pubs are bothered by the smoke they can give them gasmasks and increase their wages. It would look kinda funky.

the main virtue of pubs is that you don't have to clean up afterwards. yeah, expensive. $7.50 Australian for a pint (british not american) at the local microbrewery. enough to keep the undergrads away but makes for a pretty expensive night out (though professors are wonderful about buying us beer). i think the smoking laws have a lot to answer for. in NZ the smoking laws resulted in a street party as the masses took their beer out onto the streets where you could smoke and the bars drew chalk lines on the tarmac to delineate their area of responsibility and put up gas heaters to keep the crowds happy. some unhappy pedestrians - but really why would you be in town that time of night if it isn't to join the street party? where i'm at in australia things are different. they are trying to get the inner city apartment thing going on for the overpaid young single civil servants and people aren't happy paying so much if they are living in the middle of a street party (go figure). you thus need to purchase a license for however many 'seats outside' and that is the number of people allowed outside with a drink. it is killing things, i hear what you are saying.
i think they could have gone about things better:
1) put the smoking section at the back of the pub such that people aren't forced to walk through the smoking section to get to the non-smoking section / the bar / the bathroom
2) put laws on the amount of air extraction equipment that is required to be running such that the smoke gets sucked out of the bar rather than drifting into the smokefree areas
the RSA clubs had it right. but not good enough for the law apparently. sigh. no smoking on campus where i was at in the US. what is the world coming to? can't some lawyer sue their butts for impinging on some right or other? whole bloody campus was founded on tobacco money - where is the gratitude?????

I liked the way they do it in Japan.
No one used mobiles on trains at all and they smoked in restaurants.

they have built shelters for the smokers , but use you imagination to what they are like, think you sit warm in the bar, you want a cig you put your coat back on an stand under a tent like struture on tha back of the pub like a naughty boy or girl

hiding behind the bike sheds when you are 13.
the smokers place at the university where i was at was (ironically enough) around the US flag. i wanted to take a photo of that - smokers gathering around the us flag (doing their patriotic duty?) but i didn't have a camera.
you might think it would be the great leveler but with the (not quite class) divisional structure between undergrads, grads, junior professors, and senior professors all was not level around the flagpole. the students who looked (superficially) like the 'alternative' 'most likely to drop out' undergrads were smoking round the flagpole (no frat guys or gals there) while the graduate students (ironically enough) were subversively hiding on balconies. wouldn't be seen dead hovering round the flagpole with the undergrads. the staff... well had all f*ck*d off, i suppose. while the rebels (least likely to be promoted?) would join the grads (risking the $500 dollar fine for court costs) the majority of the staff... had taken their business elsewhere.
cafes are the new offices.
the way of the future.
till they ban smoking on the streets, of course.
then what?
second life will be a roaring success. make me smoke in my own home - fine. that is what you get. 'distance learning'. what the f*ck ever.
the 'drinking' scene on second life is all the rage.
fueled by the prostitution scene, of course.
try as i might i have moral issues with prostitution on second life, even...
but still the club scene is raging. wonder if people are drinking at home while thats going down...
go figure.

people call second life a game
it isn't a game
obviously
its a second life.ironically
within second life
there is a game
called dark lifei'll never forget the day i was 'wandering' in second life and i encountered dark life
pay a few lindens to put a pack on your back (the HUD that gives you 'life')
and you are good to go
your second life character
role playing
dark life.there is final fantasy role playing too, i think
though i'm less clear on how much it is a game
and how much it is a role play
seemed that you needed to take up positions in the role play
time committment indeed
darklife is a fairly simplistic role playing game
the genius is a role playing game inside what is (incorrectly) perceived as a role playing gamesecond life is remarkable
a second life indeed
remember the day i met a guy in a bar
went back to his house
watched a video on his wide screen tv about brazil.remember the day i got a new dance move
went to the bar
listened to the live DJ (pretty darned good)
found some stylie jeans
brought a new skinphenomenal.
remember the day i looked round the university
learned how to rez shapes
build a house
make jewlery
design scripts (for movement of objects)the world is made of prims i told them
in the philosophy grouptried to look around a model of a hospital
(used for orientation of newbies)
access: denied
duke runs nursing distance learning on second life
oxford has a philosophy groupthat'll be me one day
playing something life
a role playing game within darklife
a role playing game within secondlife
which isn't a game at allhow to be partly in the present while partly being safe
as each layer becomes authentic (in a sense)
another layer of avoidance (in a sense) is requiredand that is one hell of a rant
but one day we will be smoking and drinking in a role playing game within darklife
a role playing game within secondlife
in a lounge in a house in a city in a country
which isn't a game at all.and of course we aren't quite sure why

(You can change your environment settings in there for night / day / turn on / off strobe lighting etc. While this is generic there are people DJing their own creations on there, too)
What amazes me is that people WILL spend Lindens (typically purchased with money) for such things as smoking animations
