Hi Phillipa - I only mentioned the people who had replied when I wrote that post.

Any thoughts on when the 'deadline' for votes should be?

All the people who live in cold climates seem to be voting no, except perhaps no rose garden whose whereabouts are unknown to me.

I'm meditating on a vote change.

SNOW FLEAS - AND THE ANSWER IS...........

Posted by Kath on February 28, 2009, at 17:15:41

In reply to Re: SNOW FLEAS? voting time/no checking online!! » Sigismund, posted by Kath on February 25, 2009, at 16:08:12

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I didn't even believe it when my friend pointed to all these little black things on the snow - thousands of them & said she wondered if they were snow fleas. I thought "Give me a break!!!" But then as I watched - the moved!!!! Some wiggled; some jumped!!!

They're called Snow Fleas. They are actually a type of "springtail" insect. They're apparently the only insect that lives in the Arctic. They've apparently been around in one form or another for hundreds of millions of years!! (How they know that I don't know.) Hubby looked up online & said where they're found, there can be around 25-million to an area of 1 Hectare. 1 Hectare = 2.5 Acres.

They hatch in the forest earth apparently. They have an anti-freeze type protein in them that prevents crystal formation!

Isn't that too much!!! Today when we went for a walk we didn't see any. The trees last time were coniferous. Today they were mostly deciduous. Don't know if that's why none today.

It was fascinating seeing them & thinking "How the heck could ANYthing live in this COLDDDDDDDDD?!"

So THAT is the answer.

If this link doesn't work, just type "snow fleas" into Google.

Hugs, Kath

Well, I'm very glad to get something right for once.

How cold was it when you saw them yourself?

You know, there are these odd critters, the name of which I forget, which live in the vents of underwater volcanoes at quite high temperatures, and need no oxygen. They live off the minerals and are a really ancient form of life.

LOL - yup you were, although at one point you were teetering on the brink of changing your vote - but wisdom prevailed. ;-)

I think that day it was about -7C several degrees below freezing.

THAT sound interesting. I wonder if we could find them on google?

I don't know, Larry.
I had thought these critters were small things.
What I do remember is that they did not use oxygen.
Other than that(?) the details fit.

The tube worms live in symbiosis with a newly categorized form of life called Archea. They used to be thought of as bacteria, but they really are too primitive in some regards even for that. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archea

The Archea supply the energy for the tube worms. The tube worms themselves provide the Archea with a home (their bodies) in which to live.

I'm sure there are other critters that host Archea.
