Wow..excellent..hard-hitting..you did a great job of showing the desperation and pain of the homeless..a situation that we as Americans and Canadians should hang our heads in shame over..thank you for sharing this..

When I first moved to NYC, there was a homeless couple living just outside my building. Eventually, it occured that here we were, all barging though their living room. So I decided to introduce myself. The woman hardly even talked other than to my shepherd, but Michael was an amazing person. He was extremely well read from any magazine or newspaper to other books people brought him. Turns out there was a community of people who cared for them perhaps because they weren't the "scary" homeless wo act irratically. If you got to know him, tho, his psychological problems started to come out.
I've since lost track of them ... I hope they're still safe. Some homeless people show incredible resourcefullnes in their survival skills.

-Thank you for your comments. You mentioned the 'resourcefulness' of homeless people, and it is so true, and also another sad fact that mental illness also plays a part. I don't really believe mental illness = homelessness, but I do believe the government and system is set up so that if you have mental illness, you are greatly at risk for poverty, hence homelessness. It is such a shame that Canada and the U.S. are just an abundance of wealth, and this is allowed to happen. :-(

-Thank you very much for your kind comments. Canada and the U.S. are lands where there a re groups of people who make billions of dollars, people with such decadence. And our governments don't even do a little to redistribute some of that wealth just so a person can have a home. To me, it should become a basic right, that everyone has a right to a safe, clean home with a warm bed.Jay

Yes, our government here in Canada and the U.S. don't really seem to care about the issue. They view homeless people as 'weak'. So, so sad. :-( And I got the pictures from a few places; my niece is a photographer, and got me access to many, and had taken some herself.Thanks Phillipa..:)

-So, you know from first-hand experience...I am so sorry you had to go through that. So many of us are one or two paychecks away from losing our homes, because think about it, if we lost our job today, how much in savings do we have to continue living where we do?

I've come across this numerous times, and that is some unknowing people seem to have a mean-streak towards the homeless. I met a guy once who said "He didn't believe in it!" So ignorant. Homeless people are on the bottom rung of societies priorities. So sad. :-(

That was wonderfully done!
The thing that struck me was the universality of it.
It so could have been my city, though I didn't recognize what faces I saw, they look physically just the same.
Sorta sad and frightening that this could be so much the same.
Just one word of warning is that you goto be REAL careful cuz some will get very upset if you take their pic w/o asking. Tho its seesm you have been careful.
And it is SO cool to talk to these people. I encourage all to do so with care. There are educated people out there and mothers, brothers, pastors, you name it...but there they are...but for the grace go I...
Not only is it mental health and addictions, its just health probs have made some people unable to work...disability doesn't cover much....head injuries, cancer, car accidents.....there are MANY reasons people are out there.
And I hate the way they are just all called a homogenized, "homeless", yes they are homeless, but for so MANY different reasons, and there needs to be more than one approach to this problem as well.
But day to day, if you want to help. You can just talk to them, pass out a smoke randomly (never do it regularly or its 'expected' and there's anger when nones forthcomming....)Or even just look at a person and smile.
I remember these stickers we had as a young person, they said 'smile, its free!'.
There's also usu lots of volunteer opportunities at soup kitchens, drop in centers, food banks etc...
So no need to feel utterly helpless....

I know what you mean. Indifference and Ignorance. I emphasize with the homeless who have mental illness, and most of them do. What ever happened to simple acts of random kindness. Everytime I go to NYC I hand out money or give them a hot coffee when its cold. Those smiles I get in return make my day.Polarbear
