Hi everyone,
I'm going to be in the Bay area for just over a week soon. My husband has been looking up things for us to do. Anyone have suggestions? So far he's just looked into going to see some redwoods at some large park (I forget where).I'd be interested in hearing about just about anything that's interesting there--both touristy and non-touristy things.
Thanks in advance.

I find it to be a grueling drive, but then I live where it's very flat. It helped for me to be the one who was driving - otherwise, my fingers were cramped from digging into the seats of the car with all the twisty turns in getting there.

> ggThe Ferry Terminal building in San Francisco is an awesome place, full of foodie gems. You'd best arrive with an appetite, a full wallet, and plan to spend several hours. Some great food specialty shops - like a mushroom store! - and of course the best cafes and restaurants, all contained in a beautifully restored building on the waterfront. Oh, and the ferries stop there.
I even enjoyed Sonoma and Napa valleys, acting as chauffeur for the wine tasters. Simply beautiful scenery with little gems of towns and oodles of great shopping.

That sounds wonderful! My b-i-l and his wife are "foodies", so they might enjoy it, too. I expect they've been there before and can clue us in.

Simply beautiful scenery with little gems of towns and oodles of great shopping.Said in laws got married in Napa, and though we didn't have a lot of free time, I did enjoy that area. We didn't get to go to any wineries, but we took a trip on the "Wine Train". That was, er, interesting, but not my favorite thing.

Thanks Phillipa. Good suggestions. We did the Alcatraz tour last time, and it was fascinating. Plus, anytime you can get out on the bay is great (weather permitting, of course).
Thanks again,

Those are great links, zen, and I was hoping for something like that. I've sent that list to my hubby so we can figure out which way to go.
Thanks!

The Exploratorium is a great deal of fun -- and your hubby might enjoy it, too.
http://www.exploratorium.edu/The Palace of the Legion of Honor is probably my favorite museum in the City. The City art museums are sorted, more of less, by their collections. Roughly, European is at the Palace of the Legion of Honor, American is at the deYoung. Both are good destinations, with a lot to see. (The deYoung is in Golden Gate Park, so you'd be near growing things -- including the Arboretum and the Japanese Tea Garden, which are both lovely places to visit.

The Academy of Sciences gave me hours and hours of thrills as a kid, and I'd even try to go with you now. I haven't been since they rebuilt. DOH! Just saw they haven't reopened yet. They do have a temporary site downtown.
http://www.calacademy.org/The Zoo, although that's mostly because I think it's near where you're staying.
Berkeley has the Hearst museum of anthropology.
And I'm pretty blank otherwise. If I think of anything more, I'll let you know.

Definitely hanging out with you, and I'm looking forward to it. BTW, my b-i-l said, "That must be some friend" about the favor you are doing me. Guess he doesn't realize that we can TALK then!
Those sites look great. I've passed them on to hubby and inlaws, too. I think we're going to have a great time.
Yeah!

Well, you're just gonna have to wonder -- until I get a chance to chat with you.

We dashed through the ferry terminal bldg. the other day to catch a ferry to Tiburon. Lovely place. Great place to visit. Can't afford to live there. I'll have to check out the terminal on a return visit.
Good recommendation, thanks. :)

We saw some very cute, very loud seals at Pier 39. Today we're driving up the coast. Looking forward to it. :)
