Do you Do Your Hair Everyday?

Posted by Phillipa on January 20, 2007, at 11:38:46

If I don't wash , condition and dry my hair daily I feel like I am not really dressed or clean how often do you do your hair? Night or morning? Thanks Love Phillipa

I shower and wash my hair every morning within an hour or so of getting up. I hate leaving the house without washing it.. it just feels wrong. Unless maybe I'd washed it the night before for some reason and pull it back into a pony tail. 90% of the time I blowdry it but no styling. However it dries is how it goes.

Good grief no.

I went three days this week without brushing my hair. My husband said it looked fabulous and I should always wear my hair that way. (He was serious. My hair is thin and when I don't brush it it gets rumpled, which can pass for volume.) I would have likely gone longer, except that my headphones got tangled in my hair.

Everyday - many products and 2 appliances involved.

I'm "funny" about my tresses.

Wow. For some reason I try to wash my hair as little as possible. I don't know why! Its just a hassle thats all I guess. Plus its longish and quite thick, so it takes ages to dry. I tend to wash it every other day, or every three days. I definately would wash it less if it weren't greasy! My mother washes her hair once a week. I think washing it and styling it etc too often can damage the hair; well thats my excuse!

I actually went for a couple of months when I was 17 when I didn't brush my hair. It didn't look any different! I was trying to get dreads, but it didn't work.

I think I'd wash my hair everyday if I lived in a hot country/state through and it could dry naturally. Finland isn't particulary hot right now, in fact its just 20F/-7C outside, so its rather cold! :o)

I try to go as long as possible before washing the hair... I got my hair cut today- nothing off the length (it's loooong) just long layers... and as I left my hair stylist said- "Come back Monday for that shampoo (I ordered some shampoo that they didn't have in stock)- you shouldn't wash your hair until Monday anyways- Tuesday actually..." and I thought of this thread :) I guess I go every two days, three if I can...

I have super-thick hair, so it takes ages to blow-dry, so I just skip that part! It helps that I shower at night, otherwise I'd probably get cold. But I at least condition my hair every day - I probably go a couple days between shampoos. And I usually wear it in a ponytail or bun, although sometimes I do a half-ponytail. I just can't stand it in my face.

Seriously, I warn people not to get me started because I could just go on and on. How shallow am I? But here it goes. (And BTW, this is all my amateur advice, just my experience and stuff I've read).

How often you wash your hair really depends on your hair type. What damages hair is heat. From the hot water to the hair dryer to the curling (or flattening) iron to lightening it. I wash my hair every other day to spare it some heat damage. During the summer I do switch to everyday though because you just sweat so much here and its gross.

If your hair is especially oily you may have to wash it everyday. But use cool water if you can. Personally I have a love of hot showers (in the winter) so I try to compensate in other ways, like letting it air dry.

I got into the habit of letting my hair air dry when it was really long (I could sit on it). My hair is also really really thick, so it just took too long and was too hot most of the time. I finally cut it, but the no drying thing just stuck. Now I will dry it if I'm especially cold, but I've been known to go out in cold weather with wet hair. (This actually became an incredibly viscous argument between me and my mother. I showed her documentation where it said that you can't get sick from a wet head, you get sick from a virus or infection, but she just wouldn't believe it).

I've been told to use shampoo without sodium lareth sulfate. I think that's the name. There's another ingredient really similar called sodium larel sulfate (I'm not sure on the spelling or the difference between the two). Whether this actually matters or not, the result usually means buying shampoo sold in a salon. I don't know if its true (if someone knows please speak up) but I have personally seen a significant difference in salon shampoos and those sold at the grocery store. And I'm totally the generic queen too. But this is one place I've seen a noticable difference in a more expensive product. Personally I wait for the 'liter sales' that everyone seems to have and stock up.

There is also a product called cholesterol which is an awesome deep conditioner. Actually it has a brand name, but cholesterol is the main ingredient.

Okay I'll quit now.

T I think you missed your calling. What an awesome salon owner and stylist you would be. And it's not too late. I wash my hair and condition and put a sticky thing on it after and then 3/4 blow dry. I have my hair professionally colored and recently it was long enough for a perm. Maybe I can get Greg to do a photobucket of it. Love Phillipa

Thanks Phillpa! I actually went to school for a few months for cosmotology right out of high school. But the depression thing got in the way. And I'm actually glad I didn't follow that route because I now know its a 'seriously' hard job that depends on people skills and confidence as much as anything. Back then I couldn't have handled that. Even now I think I might be able to do it, but would be extremely stressed by it. I like being left alone at my computer to do my work.

Awww, that's too cute! I have been wanting a perm lately for the first time since the 80's. I love curly hair. We always want the opposite of what we have I guess. So is that page associated with Clearskies in some way?

Very pretty phillipa! That wasnt what I pictured you looking like.. although I'm not sure what I DID picture. :)

I had my hair permed once a few years ago and I really liked it. I'm just hesitant to do it again because I hate the first few weeks... I looked like I stuck my finger in an electric socket until it relaxed a little bit. :) I think it made me look older though, which is great, because I'm 24 and still get asked if I'm in high school... pfft.

Two or three times a week.

I hate washing my hair, especially in the morning.

It also doesn't take much for me to feel dressed-- though--

I wash it everyday, I kind of have to...it gets pretty oily looking (I do skip a day on weekends though)
I must admit aside from washing and conditioning it I can be pretty lazy with it.......
these days though I use a leave in anti-frizz moisturizer thing and something that will give it
texture- "texture paste"-whatever the hell that is
and I blow it dry-the minimum to keep it from sticking into whatever directions it decides to
I've got thick hair too and I am thin on patience

I wash my hair every 2-4 days.

It's really short right now, and sometimes i wake up and I look all kinds of crazy. little pieces sticking out in all directions.

This am was particularly bad. even though I washed it yesterday afternoon...

I wet it as I washed my face, and then blowdried it into a somewhat smoother look. I wouldn't call it styled, but at least it's not "bed head".

plus I love an excuse to use my Aveda hairspray. It smells SOOO good. I swear it's aroma therapy.

I need to get it cut again. it's been about 8 weeks, and it's getting a little too long for this particular style

once or twice I've done my hair into a mohawk and gone out like that. It's kind of fun, but I have to be feeling really bold to pull it off.

Oh dear - just call me a slob!

Actually, it depends on if I'm feeling depressed or not.

If I'm NOT feeling down, I wet my hair (it's a bit longer than chin length & is VERY naturally curly) under the bathtub tap, towel-pat it & put some gel goo in it & either put it on top of my head heald in a circular comb or comb it & pull it into curly strands with my fingers. I wash it maybe once a week.

If I'm feeling down, I just put it up in the circular comb & try to make it look decent...if it doesn't I put a triangle head-scarf on!! And if I'm 'down' I might wash it every 2 weeks or more!!!! :-(((((

I didn't wet it today, so that's a bit of an indication that it's not the greatest day.

hugs, Kath

interesting question

I had a therapy "assignment" to do my hair and cursatory primp for three days straight. It was when I was in a deeply downward drain (and drained) spiral. It took EVERYTHING to do that.
