I'm living in fear

Posted by Deneb on July 14, 2006, at 13:28:06

I still don't have an appointment to get that biopsy to see if I have cancer. I've had the lump for 6 months now and I still don't know if it's cancer. If I have cancer, no one cares. People don't call me back. I'm going to die and no one cares.

My membership at that cancer support forum is going to be deleted. The moderator was civil about it.

I'm upset. I'm scared. I've been waiting for sooooo long. I don't know if I have cancer. No one cares. I could be dying right now and no one cares. I'm just going to wait for death now. :-( I can't see a future until I find out if I have cancer.

I found another lump on the other side. How long before I find out if this one is cancer? Even if I get the biopsy and find out my first lump is not cancer I still have to worry about the new lump. I hate this.

No one cares if I have cancer. Why doesn't the lady at the office get back to me like she said she would? I can't stand this. I'm living my life in fear. I can't stand this!

I don't think anyone is taking me seriously because I'm so young. People in their 20s can get cancer. No one cares. :-( I'm upset. I don't want to think of cancer anymore. I could be dying and no one cares.

I don't want to worry anymore!!!

I had sonograms (ultrasounds) that show that my lump is "most likely a fibroadenoma", but they can't be 100% sure. Ultrasounds can't tell whether something is malignant or not. They just give clues as to whether a lump is cancerous or not.

Now I found another lump on the other side. I want biopsies for all my lumps. I can't rest until I get them. It's strange that the ultrasound didn't pick up this new lump. I think I felt this lump 6 months ago also.

I hate how people thinks I'm a hypochondriac now because I keep thinking I have cancer.

I got kicked off that cancer site because I was writing too much about my fears.

I completely understand that you're scared, and that's okay. It's fine to be scared, but don't let fear and negativity consume you. Freaking out about it isn't going to make the doctors work any quicker, and it won't make things better.

Try to calm down, think positive, and take it one day at a time. Positive thinking is good for the immune system too :)

if you need to talk or vent, i will listen.

((((((((((Deneb)))))))))

People who know you care about you. Medical office staff probably don't care about individuals unless they get to know them. In fact, if they DID get really involved with each person, they'd probably go bonkers! Think how stressful it'd be!

Anyway Deneb, I had a lump many years ago. My Mom & 3 of her sisters died of breast cancer, so I was pretty freaked!! I had to wait weeks to finally know. They did an ultrasound & that was as far as it went.

I DO know what it is to worry about cancer. Believe me, if I have a sore finger, I think I have cancer in my finger!!

I'm sorry you're going through this. Take one minute at a time if you need to & know that people care about you.

love, Kath

Thank-you for listening and caring cloudydaze. I still don't have an appointment for my core needle biopsy yet. The surgeon's office is having a hard time getting through to the place that does them. It helps me to know that the doctors wouldn't let me wait this long if they thought it was cancer. They sure are making me wait! :-(

So, the ultrasound was good enough for you? I had several ultrasounds and they all showed my lump is most likely a fibroadenoma. It's the "most likely" part that I don't like. I just want to know for sure. I know that isn't possible, but I want to know as much as I can.

Sorry about your Mom Kath. It must have been difficult for you.

*****yes I was OK with that. They said it might be a cyst. Maybe I SO wanted to hear that it wasn't serious, that I latched onto that!****

********Yes - 'most likely' can be un-nerving. I think it's a good way to look at it - what you said about if they thought it was cancer they wouldn't make you wait so long. I haven't read everything about this for you, but it sounds like some other doctor said it wasn't cancer?

You have to do what you have to do. Good for you in being proactive about your health. I think the main thing in the meantime is to really try not to worry & certainly not to catastrophize (IS that a word?!!) To some extent I believe that we create our own reality....might as well expend your energy on good stuff if possible.******

******Thanks Deneb. It was devastating for me. I'm an only child & my Mom & I were VERY close. For decades I hadn't really grieved very much at all. Recently, I've been getting in touch with that. Take care, Deneb :-)) Kath********

Yo Deneb - what about this type of self-talk:

great - now I'll get the biopsy to reiterate (or emphasize or some other positive word) the doctors' diagnosis of NOT Cancer.

I hope it won't hurt too much. I'm a big wimp when it comes to pain.

My appointment is on Monday. I'm having it done in a cancer centre. How scary is that? Me, in a cancer centre!

Now I'm worried they will give me a pneumothorax because my breasts are small and when I lie down, you can't even tell I have breasts.

I have a lot of health anxiety. I'm getting some support on a health anxiety site. It's much better than the breast cancer support site. People on the health anxiety (HA) site really understand me. There are lots of people like me there. I can write about my fears over and over again and people understand. I'm very glad I found that site.

It didn't hurt at all. The fine needle aspiration biopsy hurt, but this didn't. It didn't even hurt when the doc injected me with anesthetic.

Now I have to wait 8-10 days for the results. The radiologist said my lump is a fibroadenoma. It's good to know that everyone who has seen my lump says it's a fibroadenoma.

Great that that's over & I'm so glad it didn't hurt.

Hope you can just relax & await your confirmation that everything is OK!!!!!! ;-)

I'm not thinking about it much, but in October I have to have a skin cancer removed. It's the very least problematic kind to have. Just had the specialist look at it a few weeks ago & he said that this kind grows VERY slowly & does NOT spread.

I guess I'm improving in my cancer-worry, come to think of it, because I believe him & am not worried.

EXCEPT about the freezing needle. It's where ny nose meets my face, just above the round part of my nostril. There was a - well - I don't know how to decribe it, but almost like a pimple that would bleed as I washed my face, etc. It didn't heal & my fam. doc. has told me in the past that's one thing to definitely be aware of. I avoided paying attention to it for a couple of months...went to fam. doc. He gave me cream which helped immensely but didn't totally heal it. I returned to fam. doc. & he said it was so small that he didn't know what they'd do anyway, but I said I definitely wanted his referral to a specialist.

Specialist said it was - I think it was basal cell cancer or something - not serious, but that he'd like to remove it.

I said that when it didn't heal I knew I wanted it checked by a dermatologist. He said, "Smart lady!!" I didn't tell him that my doctor had pretty well said, Don't worry about it!!!!

I have visions of the freezing causing pain to shoot up into my eye!!!!!!!!!!!! wimper. I'm doing pretty well in not thinking about it.

Your post scared me. Sorry. I like to hear that there is nothing to worry about. I don't even want to consider that the news might not be good. It's part of my health anxiety.

The radiologist said that they don't usually biopsy lumps that looked like mine. She said they do it when the patient insists on it.

Deep breath Deneb (((((((((((you)))))))))))

You are simply (and ONLY) waiting for their confirmation of what you've already been told hun.

This is just that one little extra step to put your mind at ease. As you said, they don't even usually do this - ONLY to put particular patient's minds at ease.

Deep breath & smile luv, Kath

Deneb a radiologist or surgeon usually can tell right away if it's cancer or not. A noncancerous lump has well defined borders. A cancer is not round. And a fiboadenoma is usally round and encapsulated. I'm sure you've already googled it. But if not set your mind at ease and do. And I'm lated on my follow-up mammogram that I had calcification . Calcification is ususally non cancerous too but it can change. They put a marker in my breast to see if it grows and if there is more calcification. Love Phillipa
