Most of the people I know haven't even finished (and some haven't started) their houses yet. My mother doesn't even have all her walls down, much less put back up. Trailers are everywhere.
And people are evacuating from Florida.
I think I feel sick.

I need a big chair to curl up in. Like I used to curl up in Daddy's rocker.
I don't know if they make chairs big enough for me to curl up in anymore.

What did the rocker look like, Dinah? I bet it was very comfy.
FWIW, I heard that the water near you isn't as warm (or cold? I can't remember) as it was last year, so any storms won't be as bad. I hope that's true.

It was a wild and woolly night. No substantial damage where I live, and no coastal flooding either (I'm on the central Florida gulf coast). I was paralyzed with anxiety last night, slept about 2 hours. Boy do I miss my xanax.

I'm so glad you're ok.
My therapist is in Florida this week, and I didn't pay too much attention to where. I think he said Pensacola so he should be all right.
It's going to be a long several months.

I love that! I had forgotten. :) It's just how I used to feel.
Daddy always rocked when he was upset. You could tell *how* upset by lying awake at night and hearing the squeak of the rocker. It's funny to think of him being soothed by the motion, but I know I am so I guess he was as well.

It looked pretty much like the one in Emmy's link, but with a cushioned seat and back. I'm going to have to settle for a rocker recliner, I think. Because unless I get the propmasters to build me one, I don't think I can curl up in a rocker any more. :)
It was just that I suddenly felt like I did in that hotel room, huddled over the internet, trying to tune in our local radio station, and watching the national news simultaneously. Hearing about people on roofs and shootings and lootings and fires and seeing our officials cry, and wondering if there was a home to go back to, and wondering if life as we knew it was over.
Of course the news was exaggerated as often is the case. But life as we knew it is over, so it wasn't completely wrong.
It's silly to feel so distressed. We had a very trauma free evacuation. We weren't at the Superdome or Convention Center like some people we knew. Our house wasn't flooded. We didn't go to a shelter except to pick up our inlaws (who refused to evacuate when we did.) We evacuated very early and went to our reserved hotel room. We were really very lucky.

It's *not* silly to feel so distressed.
It's natural, it's human nature, it's sensible. Heck, the entire nation was fearful of that storm. Try to do what I'm not very good at - take it easy on yourself.Here's another hug for good measure

I just posted a care package out to my friend in NO yesterday, and hadn't realised the season had started over..
She's still living on a great big cruise ship (she's a police captain), but says its not so bad, she just wishes she could be living with her husband and step-son again though

There was an article in the paper the other day. NO still has a population about 40% (??) smaller than before. One parish to the south is only about 4% of the population it used to be.
They officially estimate about 95,000 to be in Houston, but that number can't be right. There's still about 92,000 on FEMA aid, so most estimate us to have about 150,000 from your area.
It must be very strange for those still there.

It really is strange. And the strangest part is the emptiness. Although you wouldn't know it from parking downtown or traffic. The surrounding areas are bustling, but the main part of New Orleans, except for the few high areas along the river, are still eerily empty. Not as quiet as they used to be, with construction much greater than it used to be, but still empty.
Now the distressing part is reading about the theft of construction materials and even architectural details from the older homes. It must be terrifying for those who have rebuilt or are rebuilding to know how rampant crime is.
I have to stop reading the paper.

I'm so lucky our family was able to stay together. My husband was assigned to Texas after the hurricane and we would have had to live apart for over six months. But then Rita came and they decided to send him home instead.
I can't imagine what would have happened to us had we been separated. I'm not cut out to be a single mom, and he's not cut out to be a single dad.
I really admire your friend. To have that job is hard enough, to have it and be separated from your family is heartbreaking.

I think it's survivors guilt. No one here seems to be able to complain about anything without adding appreciation that we have it better than so many others. And that includes the people who lost their homes.

I'm regretting very much right now that we didn't leave. Husband says we can't reconsider until next year at earliest if opportunity comes up again.
I think if the first hurricane had come before we decided, I'd have decided to move.

Dinah we drove three hours north toward Charlotte and the flooding and wind stopped. Charlotte is six hours inland. And about the same for Durham and Chapel Hill. Yeah I know until it's here again we don't think of it. We still have a condo to sell there. It's been for Sale since last hurricaine lot of damage done and its just now finished. Emerald Isle was where it is. Hope they stay away from you this year. Love Phillipa ps do you have a plan?
