I'm one of those odd sorts that doesn't care overmuch for ice cream. In the store bought kind, I only like Cherry Garcia and mint chip.

But we used to make our own with those swirly frozen canisters, and we'd put just about anything into the basic recipe. My favorite was cantaloupe ice cream.

OMG, I remember that from my childhood. Did the one you're thinking of have pieces of gum in it? I always found it difficult to eat the ice cream and not the bubble gum, but I somehow mananged.

Now my favorite is Braum's German Chocolate. It has coconut and nuts in it. I like to get it made into a shake. I also like plain mint ice cream without chocolate chips, which is hard to find. Of course nothing in the world beats HOMEMADE vanilla. I don't think I've had that in more than 20 years! I can still remember the taste though.

Mmmmmmm, ice cream.

I need to replace our homemade ice cream maker. My poor son never did get a chance to try it. We had the canisters sit in our freezer for forever until we had to dispose of all refrigerator contents after Katrina. We used to use it all the time at my family's house.

Not that I'm complaining. Refigerator contents were a very small loss.

But we need to get a replacement and use it this time.

They make it up here in Canuckland ;-) I've never tasted it. Are there chunks of gum in it? If so, what do you do with them? Hold them in the side of your cheek 'til the ice cream is all gone?

I've never had anything with hot fudge sauce (or hot caramel or anything) on it.

It must be nice. Does the sauce go hard due to the cold temp?

I love hot waffles with ice cream between them.

When I was a kid, there used to be an underpass between the Toronto Eaton's & Simpson's stores. Along the underpass, there were 2 places that fascinated me.
1) a donut-making machine. It spat out donut-shaped blobs of dough into a moving stream of hot oil & then they cooked; it flipped them over; the next side cooked; it plopped them into icing, etc. It was fascinating.
2) An ice cream/waffle setup where they heated the waffles, then sliced a square slice of ice cream off a brick & put it between the waffles.
YUM......the ice cream sorta melts & the waffles stay hot. I had forgotten about that. I must buy some waffles & ice cream & treat myself.

Kath you let the ice cream melt in your mouth save the bubblegum and chew it till you're tired of it then some swallow it others spit it out. Is it an old wives tale that if you swallow bubblegum in will stay in your stomach forever? Love Phillipa

I used to roam the boardwalks when I grew up in Historic Keystone, South Dakota. There was a fudge shop to die for, a BIG ice cream shop and most fascinating, a taffy shop. I used to watch that taffy swirl over and over. My mouth is salivating now. The owner would give me one or two pieces for free when I stopped in.

Sort of hot and cold at the same time. And it melts again in your mouth.

Dairy Queen. You can do the experiment for under $2. (I think)

That is so Canadian. I don't think they do that, any where else.

Both are at the CNE, every year. You can get an admission/all the rides you can handle day pass for something like $20, if and ONLY if, you buy it before the first day of the CNE.

Zellers has the passes. A serious bargoon. Then you have the money to buy those little donuts and ice cream waffles.

raspberry gelato
coconut
rum raisin

(actually my favorite ice cream is this kind that I had in S.E. Asia. It's green pandanus flavored coconut based ice cream, scooped onto white sandwich bread, topped with toasted coconut and chopped peanuts. don't knock it 'til you try it. An old lady was selling it on top of a mountain. I never saw anything like it since, and I looked everywhere!)

Good idea.

One of the benefits of birthdays is that eventually one reaches a point where things are CHEAPER - SOME things.

I now qualify for 'senior' prices for certain things - movies for one. I suspect the CNE tickets might also qualify.

The humorous thing is that people could do it 'way earlier - when the majority of salespeople at the movies for example are in their teens, anyone over 30 is ancient - AS IF they're going to ask "Could I see your ID please?" LOL

I love the CNE. One of the things that makes me saddest about my daughter's environmental illness is that we used to go to the CNE together every year. That's totally impossible now. We love the air show. I especially LOVE the enormous fighter jet that ZOOOOOMMMMMSSSSS deafeningly low overhead then soars straight up into the sky until it's invisible. I just love that. I love when it flies overhead & you can FEEL the very atoms of the air vibrating!!!!! I can't imagine flying one of those things. I think I'd love it - not bombing anything of course, but just that incredible power!!!!!

I wanted to ask you if you're having any beneficial results from the Chinese medicine?

I hope so.

Wow - sounds most unusual!!! What a great memory for you.

I had forgotten having mango milkshake in India! Was it ever good!

And nothing has ever beaten Chai in the middle of the night in the middle of the deserty country, made by old men at a roadside stove with a string-bed nearby with more old men sitting on it. There weren't even walls; or chairs; or much at all. Stars twinkling almost painfully strong overhead making me think of the Arabian Nights. What memories
