Here's a more obscure song from them that I love:
Calling Occupants.Still remember where I was when I heard she had died. There hasn't been another voice like hers. Probably won't be either. I really miss their music.

Wasn't Karen Carpenter's death caused by her potassium being low? Love Phillipa she was so pretty too.

I would sing many of the Carpenters songs to my son when I was pregnant with him. I even used to place the earphones on my tummy!
Good song!!

It was complications from anorexia, actually heart failure. If I remember correctly, someone in a review called her "chunky" or something, and that was her trigger.

Karen Carpenter had one of the richest voices I've ever heard. Her voice had such depth, it was palpable. I could make it into a blanket, fashion it into a cocoon, and never leave.

She was a natural. Her brother was a great producer
and she was the first female drummer that I ever laid eyes on.
I thought it was one of the saddest losses in music...still do.

It is my understanding that she died from heart failure, caused by years of aneorexia. Very sad :-(

That's the sort of thing that would keep me up nights. Calling Occupants of Interplanetary -- what?
Karen Carpenter's death scared me. Even though I knew, intellectually, that death from anorexia was a possibility, I never *knew* that people died from it. It's still a tough one for me to get my mind around.
Hey, did you ever hear the Sonics' version of "Superstar?" Suddenly changes the connotations. Great version, though.

>It was originally recorded by band named Klaatu, a Canadian group who had this mystery as to why they wouldn't play live gigs, It turned out they were all studio musicians who were unacustomed to performing live,
I seem to remember that they were announced as Channelling the Beatles, or being Beatles in Disguise, Some times it was the Beach Boys being channelled. I liked the mysteriousness of the sound and group.Imagine my surprise to hear the dulcet tones of Karen and Richard singing of their songs, Fantastic!!

Ever hear "Lick the Tins"'s rendition of "I can't Help Falling in Love with You?. It was used at the end of "Some Kind of Wonderful". Not a great movie, has it's moments, great ending, great song - beautiful punk rendtion of the Elvis hit.

CS,
Thanks for that! I'm going to have to check that band out. I really like some of the Canadian bands I've been listening to lately... Arrogant Worms and Three Dead Trolls in a Baggie.
Ok. I like Celine too, and enjoy her French music as much as her English. There's lots of tallent in our very large neighbor to the North.--Dee

CS,
I just heard Klaatu's Calling Occupants. I really enjoyed it, and in hearing it, I have to say that I am even more impressed with the Carpenters... not that they did it better, but that they so well kept the feel and integrity of the original in their version. It's one thing to take another's song and make it your own, but quite another to take someone else's song, play it well, make it your own, but NOT CHANGE IT.
Thanks so much for pointing me to the original.--Dee

So many beautiful songs. Now I've got these spinning around in my head, and memories are flooding back. Kinda nice, actually.
I Can't Make Music
Here I am just sittin' around
With an old piano in a vacant room
And the same old feelin's come again
So uncertain hurtin' scared
I though I grew, but here I am again
Shoulda seen the train be passin' thru.
I thought I knew
And I can't make music
No I can't make rhyme
No I can't do anything
To take me away this time
I know it's an old cliche to say
I feel I'm gonna die
And I hear it's goin' out to cry
So I'm gonna say some kind words to you
I like to wish you luck & hope
That life will be with someone else
Just like I though it would be with me
But I can't see...
And I can't make music
No I can't make rhyme
No I can't do anything
To take me away this timeTHIS MASQUERADE (written by George Benson)
Are we really happy here
With this lonely game we play
Looking for wild words to say
Searching but not finding
understanding anyway
We're lost in a masqueradeBoth afraid to say we're just to far away
From being close together from the start
We tried to talk it over but the words got in the way
We're lost inside this lonely game we playThoughts of leaving disappear
Each time I see your eyes
And no matter how hard I try
To understand the reasons
Why we carry on this way
We're lost in this masquerade(instrumental)
We tried to talk it over but the words got in the way
We're lost inside this lonely game we playThoughts of leaving disappear
Each time I see your eyes
And no matter how hard I try
To understand the reasons
Why we carry on this way
We're lost in this masquerade
One LoveOne love in my young life
Took me somewhere I had never been
And I want to live again, breathe again
In the shelter of his brightly woven love song
So long I have wanted love to be
Sitting just this near to me
Now my waiting heart is free(*) few are the choices we are given
The sands of time pass quickly by
One dream of my young life
Now stands holding out his hand to me
Now I can’t help but believe that my whole life will be
Spent in one loveRepeat (*)
Spent in one love
Spent in one love
A Song For YouI've been so many places in my life and time
I've sung a lot of songs I've made some bad rhyme
I've acted out my love in stages
With ten thousand people watching
But we're alone now and I'm singing this song for youI know your image of me is what I hope to be
I've treated you unkindly but darlin' can't you seeThere's no one more important to me
Darlin' can't you please see through me
Cause we're alone now and I'm singing this song for you(*) You tought me precious secrets of the truth withholding nothing
You came out in front and I was hiding
But now I'm so much better and if my words don't come togetherListen to the melody cause my love is in there hiding
(**) I love you in a place where there's no space or time
I love you for in my life you are a friend of mineAnd when my life is over remember when we were together
We were alone and I was singing this song for youRepeat (*)
Repeat (**)
We were alone and I was singing this song for you
HideawayI’ve got to find a place to hideaway
Far from the shadows of my mind
Sunlight and laughter, love ever after
For how I long to find a place to hideaway
I hear you whisper and I must obey,
Blindly follow where you’ll be
Knowing tomorrow brings only sorrow
Where can I go to find a place to hideaway
Bright colored pinwheels go round in my head
I run through the mist of the wine
(*) the night and the music remind me instead
The world once was mine
I’ll save my pennies for a rainy day
But where can I buy another you?
Dreams are for sleeping
Love is for weeping
Oh, how I long to find a place to hideawayRepeat (*)
This is the end of the thread.
