Am i just being Anal???

Posted by willyee on January 8, 2006, at 21:21:07

Maybe im just looking to much into this, and i know this will be redirected but i just wanted to share something.

Am i the only one that finds the show MONK offensive, more so there is a new ad out for it which goes something like.........."go online and take the test and see if ur a bit monkish"

I personaly find it offensive that they make such light of what for some is a totaly disalbitating life ruining disease OCD.

I dont find anything funny about it,and i dont think its funny when u see monk engaged in these ocd acts,i think its an insult.

Willy, do you have OCD?

I don't think I do but I do things like everything in the dishwasher having its own spot.

I found Monk funny, the OCD bit, but I tend to find my own fussiness entertaining as well.

I dont have ocd in terms of maybe washing hands over and over,or checking locks, but it takes me a long time to leave the house as i want everything put away neatly.

I notice when im sitting at my computer dust in corners etc stuff like that.

Its not that i cant make light of it,i just dont think monk show respects it at all.

They never show a dark side to it,its all one big joke.

I agree that the commerical is offensive and well, just stupid. I haven't actually seen the show, but I sorta know the gist of it. I like the idea of showing someone who has a disabling condition being successful in his work. On the other hand, I agree with you that it is simplistic and fake to only show the "good" side of it.

I'd be really interested in what some of the mental illness organizations have to say about the show. Anyone heard anything?

Best,
EE

Hi Will,
i have had ocd since i was 12, severe at times,
and i just went and took the "monk test", against my better judgement!! it is just one more example of why people don't feel compassion for others with mental health issues, i agree with you completly, i wasn't offended, but saddened, i have struggled my whole life to make my family see this disease is real, and monk makes it look advantagous!! your 100% not anal, it is idiotic...john btw, did you see mtv about 3 peeps with ocd, it made it look like a cakewalk, like you can beat ocd with a few weeks of tough therapy, [i wish]!

i don't know about what you are talking about...
but i can't tolerate much tv.
because...
yeah...
i just look at it as the things we feed ourselves...
and what goes in will come out
and i really don't tolerate it very well...

I find Monk hilarious too, probably BECAUSE I have pretty severe OCD and I need anything in my life that will help me make light of it. It has been a troublesome condition since I was a teenager and it has made me a bit too serious about life in general.

I love the part of the ad when Monk screws in the head of the missile...I can see ***ME*** doing something like this. I've found myself many times feeling "visually disturbed" by things being out of place or assymetrical and I felt compelled to correct them no matter where I've been.

I was sorry to hear that it has offended anyone. I was shocked about the content when I first saw the show, but when realized the "jest" of it, I began to enjoy it.

There was one particular episode where Monk became very frustrated with how unhappy his life was, and gets a visit by his wife who persuades him to take his doctor's advice and take some sort of psych meds. The whole show revolved around
how different his life was after he took the meds - he became totally extroverted and lost all his Monkish characteristics including his detective abilities.

That episode made me really angry. So psych drugs are happy pills and they make you into a different person? The show ended with Monk throwing away the pills and deciding that he prefers being "himself"
So people who take psych meds really just need to learn to deal with their problems themselves? I get angry just thinking about the message that TV sends about mental illness.

In fairness though, nobody likes being the butt of jokes. I'm a big fan of stand-up comedy and the standard fare is always "you know how "x" people are..." I don't think that these comedians go out of their way to offend minorities, it's just that part of the comedy equation for them is making the audience feel they're part of a majority looking down on a minority.

So I'm not really offended by Monk or any other stereotypes of mental illness in the media. But as somebody who has to deal with a very real and very debilitating illness every day, I don't really care to watch stuff like that. And I prefer humour that can make you laugh without stereotyping people with disadvantages.

I think Monk is hilarious. I've got OCD, not terribly severe I suppose, moderate maybe. But it does affect my life.

I thought the show with the medications was silly, and could probably give people the wrong idea. But I wasn't really upset.

What really really annoyed me was "As Good As It Gets". I mean I loved the movie, but clearly there were aspects of what was going on with this man that were not caused by OCD, and yet it was implied that it was. People with OCD are not typically rude or antisocial.

Hi Dinah,

I wonder whether "Carol, the waitress" (played by Helen Hunt) had any idea what she was getting into when she decided to go ahead with that relationship. I think the OCD was the least of Mr. Udall's (Jack Nicholson's) problems.

Why is it that rude, antisocial, mean people have epiphanies and suddently metamorphose into nice people only in the movies? Do you remember William Hurt in "THE DOCTOR"? He was horrible until he got cancer and turned into a kind, decent person. And how about Harrison Ford in "REGARDING HENRY"? He was the meanest pr***k until some thug shot a hole through his head during a robbery at a convenience store. Somehow, that traumatic brain injury changed him from a cold, heartless SOB into a compassionate, loving family man. Why can't that happen in real life?

The universal dream of redemption?

I didn't mind Regarding Henry too much. I figured he had some sort of specific brain damage. Like the guy who had the bar through his head?

But I think the ones where the redemption comes about from the love of a good woman cause a lot of pain in the real world. Unrealistic expectations.

Do you mean Phineas Gage? Phineas Gage had a bar through his head. Phineas. . .What a great name! I heard that Julia Roberts named her son Phineas.
