i'm not sure what the Deadly Relative has in mind for this years festivities (this is the Deadly Relative who hosts christmas dinner every year but has yet to learn to cook). I believe in her off time she parades around as the Grim Reaper just to stay in character.
my mother in law suggested we eat only the dishes we bring since everyone is contributing something. The Deadly Relative provides the bird and since that was almost the product of our demise last year i'm thinking a birdless christmas is on the horizon for me.
the question is, should i make an attempt to look like i am eating her food? you know, slide some turkey under the rice and voila, it's gone?
or should i be brutally honest about how christmas day just sucks at the emergency room...everybody is in the back eating leftovers, blah, blah, blah.
last years free range turkey cooked realllly low with the giblets inadvertently left inside created a cornacopia of bacteria that could have quelled half the western world.
so the tasteful etiquette question is how should i handle this? your comments are appreciated.

yeah i had the same ordeal at thanksgiving when i was at my inlaws and there was the famous giblet stuffing. now, i really don't like meat, so that was bad. i would suggest that you say that you are trying the vegetarian thing. that would work if you don't see that person very often. and if you run into her while stuffing your face w/ a cheeseburger--just say that it didn't work out. say you saw a special on animal rights or read up on the horrible conditions cattle are kept in before they are slaughtered. something like that. good luck!

Oh this one is easy for me as my MIL is old and grosses me out by leaving food sitting on a table ALL day....so the bird may be done and on a table by 12 but she sez lets eat at 5 I um am way picky and won't eat food thats sat out over 15 minutes. So I eat before I go and once said I wasnt feeling well....once said I HAD to eat before I came as I had to stop elsewhere and sometimes I have put food on a plate and moved it around and fake ate...then tossed it when I helped clean...EAT BEFORE YOU GO. MY HUBBY ALWAYS ENDS UP SICK IN THE JOHN

Mega loling here...um he chooses to eat it. Once he saw my face the first time we went to eat there and his mom btw is a good cook and very nice but hasnt a clue on germs..I didnt know I looked geeked out but he told me later he KNEW I was gonna fake I ate..that time I munched on a few crackers as I was unprepared for homemade mac and cheese that sat out for HOURS and had dry spots you saw on sight. A hint on germs even veggies left out can harbor them...some people got very ill some died from some restirant that has green onions in the salads or something...I prefer to cook at home and eat then pick..its safer

I have a question, why do you all keep going to this relative's house if she poisons you? Why doesn't another relative offer to host the dinner and provide the bird? Just curious.

I agree. However, they have three small children so they insist it's easier for the kids to be in their own home where their toys are, etc. Also they want their kids to have the memories of Christmas at home. So every year we traipse over there.

I'm with Smokey, vegetarian it is!
I haven't told my folks I've gone vegetarian yet.
I was going to, but then I knew they'd fuss over what to feed me.
There is always more than enough food so it wouldn't really be a problem.
So I thought I'd just tell them when they went to put meat on my plate.
But then they will just fuss then and say 'why didn't you tell us'.
Dad will throw a fit anyways,
I was his bloody steak companion.
Now when I look at meat I don't see meat
I see dead animal
Turkey
Chicken
Pig
Cow
Sheep
Yuk.I will just avoid it all as best I can
But may have to comprimise.
It's just for the day
Then I shall tell them next week that I just converted.

Or you could tell her that this year you will provide the turkey and cook it and bring it over since she has always been so *kind* before. <grins> Unfortunately, at this date, she has probably already bought hers.
Also, wondering why nobody told her that they got food-poisining before???
Anyway, good luck with your Christmas meal this year and do try to not visit the doctors and nurses in the ER.

she knows six of us got food poisoning but it's kind of like the drunk uncle in the corner...no one talks about it.
