Anyone ever make gourd rattles? Am trying to do this right now. Am baking them in an oven to dry them out (I live in a colder climate, and don't want to wait a year for them to dry outside.) Anyone have any tips on oven baking or rattle basics? For whatever reason, my gourds turned black (am realizing now this sounds really strange). I think it's cause my oven is evil and likes to burn things. Are black gourds normal from baking?

Gourds are mostly water so an oven experience is probably a bit of a trauma. Extreme heat will blacken the outside while the mositure inside, that is trying to escape, may cause a "rattle".
I have no experience in cooking but did stay at a Holiday Inn last night.

Yes, I see your point. They actually aren't ornamental gourds either, they are really eating gourds. The gourds actually made a shrieking/ whistling sound while drying. Three of the four gourds made it thru the drying-out process. Sadly, one gourd collapsed. Poor thing :)
I remember Holiday Inns from a long time ago. They have gotten nicer (and more expensive, it seems) over the years. It's funny how things change. I really miss Howard Johnson's, though. The restaurant part used to have those free cookies on top of your ice cream. Howard Johnson's loging always smelled funny to me. They didn't serve gourds, either :)
