Wobbling before weekend trip

Posted by Fi on November 3, 2004, at 15:51:42

I'm due to go and visit family this weekend- something I would very much like to do. Problem is that they live several hundred miles away, so its a bit of a slog.

Whatever, the last time I tried it I felt a bit rough to start with (had been fine the day before), and ended up feeling too depressed to stay on the train and complete the journey.

Today I have started to feel a bit rough- and I am meant to be travelling in less than 48 hours. I so want to get to my family, but its scarey that I may end up being unable to go.

And does that mean I will never be able to visit them?!

I know there is no 'answer' to this, but it helps to share it.

Fi,
It sounds like you are saying that it is the traveling itself that is daunting. For me the mode of transportation can make a huge difference. There are times I can't handle the crowds on a bus or train but really enjoy visiting friends if I can get there by car which I think of as a mobile closet to hide in. Or I find trains easier than the bus and both of those easier than airplanes. And of course middle of the night seems to make everything easier for me. This helps with my "being around people" problem but it does make another problem worse. Traveling puts me into a kind of meditative state of mind where there is nothing to do but think about "things" and that this can be unbearable. I haven't found a fix for that one yet.

Good luck with your trip and enjoy your time with your family. But, if by any chance you can't make it this time I hope you can keep in mind that another time it WILL be easier and don't beat yourself up over it too much.

Jane

hey fi :)

i absolutely agree with jane. she made some very good points. :)

is there anything you could take with you on the trip to make it easier, such as a good book, some magazines, a newspaper, a walkman, candy, sodas or other goodies, a journal or something to write in, etc.? and perhaps you could take a picture of your family with you on your trip to remind you of your destination and as a source of comfort? and perhaps there are some other comfort items you could take as well. and try and think positive thoughts about taking the trip..you might even enjoy it! (take whichever of these suggestions might be helpful to you. i say go for it!! :))

sounds like you may need to make a cup of tea/coffee and sit down and force yourself to think about what stops you midway? is the prospect of seeing everyone daunting in some way...although the love is there perhaps there is something else there as well.
