I thought taht when you redirected a post on a thread that notification would still be given to those that were being notified about the thread and it would be linked to the new board?

At the top of every message you read is a hotlink to the specific post being replied to. It says, "In reply to <blue text hotlink to last post>". Clicking on that lets you go back in the thread, via a subthread. You'll know what that person was responding to. In complicated threads, that can really helps sort out who is talking about what. Of course, that all goes out the window if the poster just picked a post at random to link to their own message.
