Finally! It pays quite a bit less (almost half), and is not in my regular line of work, but at least I finally have something! I can't believe it took so long! I was really getting desperate. I'm still going to keep looking, but at least maybe I won't lose my apartment or car now.
This has been such a crazy time for me!
I start today. I was really sick with a stomach virus the last couple of days, so I'm not at my best. And its been years since I had a job where I was on my feet all day, and delt with the public. So I'm kind of nervous. Wish me luck!

TexasChic, congrats!!! I know this sounds like mumbojumbo, but for some reason, your chances of getting a job always seem better when you already have a job. You're on your way!

Hey, good luck! I know the feeling of being unemployed, or underemployed and depressed...and it is just awful. So, just take it slow, day by day. It doesn't mean this has to be the rest of your life, just a temporary thing to, as you say, pay the bills. Believe me, there have been times I have wanted to quit with all the pressure of the job at times, but I just rode it out. On rough days, with the aches and pains of depression, a good dose of a strong pain killer really helped, and I just take things slowly. Again, just go slow and with the 'flow', and all should be fine! On the rough days, just come on here and rant, rant, rant...:-) That's what we are all here for.Best wishes,
Jay

Fantastic! Only 4 weeks unemployed? You're a star! This will give you the financial security you need while/if you look for something in your field.
or - you may change your mind. I know I've changed careers, ummm, about 9 times so far in this life.

Thanks everybody!
My first day at the pet supply store went okay, but the place is so unorganized! Its really just a mess. I mean, they take care of the animals, its just the running of the place that's chaos. And I can't help but feel sorry for the animals kept in their little cages day in and day out. It just seems so wrong. I just want to set them all free! But I do like working with the animals. I'd rather work with animals than people any day!
One thing I had to do was seperate little male and female white mice. They were so cute! But then I found out people buy them to feed to their snakes! I know snakes have got to eat too, but it was still sad.
The worst task I had to do was put crickets in a bag for people who feed them to their reptiles. I hate bugs in general and really hate crickets. Luckily they're little so it wasn't that bad. But still, ewww! I never would have believed a month ago that I'd be doing this. I guess it just goes to show what you can do when you have to.
Last night I just followed this one guy around all night to get an idea of how things worked. Tonight I will watch the training videos. You know, I don't mind hard work, but I don't like situations where I'm expected to get things done but its not actually possible. And that seems to be how things are around there as far as putting out stock and organization goes. At least the care of the animals seems to be first priority.
Despite the problems, nothing can take away from the fact that I have a job and money coming in! Yea!
I also went on an interview Monday morning that I felt went really well. Its a big company (good money) and I would absolutely love to work there! I was truthful with the lady about getting fired and she seemed truly sympathetic and told me not to worry about it. I had been torn trying to figure out if I should admit it or try to sugar coat it or hide it, but in the end I decided to go with my instincts and just tell her exactly what happened. She seemed to appreciate my honestly. She said she would get back with me by today to let me know if I have a 2nd interview. So wish me luck!

keeping fingers crossed for you for a second interview! the pet store sounds like fun (with the exception of the crickets and the mice going bye bye). I know what you mean about feeling bad for the dogs in the cages. hopefully they have a play time every day out of the cages? the pet store down the street sells so many dogs because their play time is in an area where customers can pick them up and cuddle them. Of course once you hold a puppy you can forget putting it down (that's a sale!)

Well, they didn't call. I guess I'll try calling them tomorrow. I'm begining to despair of ever getting another graphics job. I've been sending out resumes for a new job for a year now with no results. But its the only thing I have experience at (plus I actually like it!). Its kind of late to start over with a new career now. But I guess I'll do what I have to.
Its funny, it seems as if the job at the pet store is a last resort for everyone working there. We were all talking about how difficult it was to find a job. What is it with the economy these days? I miss the Clinton years. The economy was good and we had all the juicy gossip to keep us entertained!

Texas Chic,
great news that you are working out at the pet store! I admire your ability to do stuff that you didn't think you could/would do.I hope the other interview goes well. I'm wishing you luck!

I've got a second interview on Wed with the graphics place! I want the job so bad I can't see straight!
Working at the pet store has made me see how much I miss doing graphics. I mean, its not horrible, its just... different. Running back and forth all day, dealing with the public. Its just not the same as a cushy desk job.
I have to close the store by myself Tue and I'm kind of freaked out about it. I really don't know near enough. But I guess its a challange. I'm not worried about the technical side – the money, paper work, and closing up and everything. Its dealing with the customers asking questions about the animals that has me worried. I just don't have the knowledge I need to be in charge. I guess I'll just have to wing it. I'm really kind of impressed with myself. I think I've been handling all this pretty well. I'm just ready to get past this rough past and on to my boring old life again.

Fantastic. Maybe there's hope for me, yet. Too bad I don't live in Texas or I'd take your job at the pet store. I have a gecko which eats live crickets, so no problem being a cricket wrangler.
Best of luck with interview #2.

My second interview went GREAT! They talked like I already have it. Its sounds like such a cool job. I've been wanting something that was more creative and artistic, but I seemed to have gotten pigeon-holed into production work. This job is exactly what I had in mind. I don't know what I'll do if I don't get it. The pet supply store job is killing me! We stayed until 3am last night dragging 40lb bags of dog food to the shelves (I'm covered in bruises). And that was after an insanely busy night (I'd forgotten what slave labor retail is!). I did nothing for 8 hours straight but get fish & crickets for people (break? what's a break?). Oh! And I had an incident with a scorpion! A guy wanted to see one so I figured I could just scoop it up in a box or something. I've been approaching these sort of things like, okay, I can do this. But when I opened the cage it came straight for me! Fast too! I was yelling and said something like "Oh God no!" The customer ran back to where I was and got me to calm down, then caught it for me. I was so freaked out! From now on customers will have to get those scary-@ss things themselves.
I've done so many things at this job I never would have dreamed I'd be doing: grabbing big white rats by their tale so I can put them in a box for people, separating girl mice from boy mice, filling bags up with crickets (crickets freak me out), getting snakes out of cages and bringing them to customers, dealing with dead stinky animals, cleaning up poop of all kinds, trying to catch an escaped Finch, Gerbil, Hamster, SCORPION, ect. I'll tell you, I've got a whole new appreciation for a cushy desk job! When I think of all the trivial things that bothered me at past jobs, its almost funny. This has certainly been a learning experience for me. I think I will be a better, happier person for all this.
I better go, I need to soak my feet or something. I hurt all over!
