Where have all the flowers gone?

Posted by DaisyM on September 6, 2004, at 19:37:03

"Young girls have picked them everyone.
Oh when will they ever learn? Oh when will theyyy, ever learn."

My secretary's young boyfriend is in Iraq and he lost part of his squadron to a car bomb yesterday. He sent an email saying this is the song they want us all to be singing. To remind everyone that real people are dying...that war is terrible, especially when you've never been away from home before and you are only 20 years old. He said he is OK and determined to be brave and do his duty. And he then he told her to go hug his mom for him because his arms aren't long enough and he was sure that she was scared for him. Besides, he said, if he could reach, he doesn't think he could ever let go. And he wondered if his mom was enough to ever make him feel safe again.

It made me so sad. So let's all sing this for Aaron and include him in your prayers tonight.

When I'm not caught up in my own misery, this war definitely ties with what I fear the most and mourn the most. I'm so proud of these soldiers, my young nephew being among them, and proud that they ended the reign of an evil man who tyrannized his countrymen. Still, the profound losses and the constant worry. . .

Oh Daisy, how sad. Everytime I hear this song, I feel so sad for those it is about and for our country. It's such a beatiful song. I have it in a few different versions...The Kingston Trio and Judy Collins. I love singing this song, though because it's so moving and a lovely, mournful melody.

I will definitely think of Aaron and his squadron when I sing it again or hear it again.

On a lighter (sort of) note...hubby and I were out listening to our favorite live band, an acoustic trio. They played the song about Kent State..."Four dead in Ohio". Hubby, not from Ohio, said in all seriousness, "I always wondered what this song was about." ARE YOU KIDDING? He said that 'cause he figured I must know since I was singing along. Sheesh, how can you not figure it out from the words? Of course he kind of blurs over them... :)

Sadly,
gg

Oh my, GG. He really didn't know? Things like this always amaze me. Kent state really is not a minor footnote in American history. It's a big d*mn deal. I'm sure you enlightened him.

And I'll be happy to sing for all of the soldiers in Iraq, and anything else I can do for them or their poor mamas.

"War, what is it good for! Absolutly nothing...say it again....."

My eyes are wet for all the young people who kill or get killed. For all the lives are changed totally from that moment on.
I think war is such a terrible problem solver.

We try to teach our children how to resolve conflict and then we rush into war. How does this make sense?
"When will they ever learn......"
or how about
"I sold my flax I sold my wheel to buy my John a sword of steel so that in battle he might...
Johnny's gone for a soldier...."

So many songs about so many people who have died, been mained, traumatized, lives ruined.....So many hearts are broken.
I find it all too sad.

We were meant for greater things...

I hope.
My prayers are with this young man.

Johnny's Gone for a Soldier

I tried to sing this for my love and my voice cracked up on the last verse.....
It just makes me so sad.

Johnny's Gone for a Soldier

Here I sit on Buttermilk Hill
Who can blame me, cryin' my fill
And ev'ry tear would turn a mill,
Johnny has gone for a soldier.

Me, oh my, I loved him so,
Broke my heart to see him go,
And only time will heal my woe,
Johnny has gone for a soldier.

I'll sell my rod, I'll sell my reel,
Likewise I'll sell my spinning wheel,
And buy my love a sword of steel,
Johnny has gone for a soldier.

I'll dye my dress, I'll dye it red,
And through the streets I'll beg for bread,
For the lad that I love from me has fled,
Johnny has gone for a soldier.

Thank you all

We found out today that Aaron is suppose to come home on leave around Sept. 27. We all have our fingers crossed. He was suppose to come home months ago.

There are so many songs about war and peace. I can only hope that as a country we learn to value all the world's children...

Thank you all for your prayers. I told my secretary today and she was in tears. This is so hard on her. We've basically made her stop watching the news. You should be worried about so much less at 19...
