Got fired.

Posted by TexasChic on September 7, 2004, at 9:27:49

On the day I wrote my last post I got fired. It was a complete set up. It would be too detailed to go into, but suffice it to say, my boss covered her tracks and made sure I wouldn't get unemployment. Of course, I know I did nothing wrong, but how can you prove it?

I have been up & down ever since. The day it happened I was upset, but then I went through a period of elation because I realized I wouldn't ever have to deal with those people again! It had really been wearing on me to have work be so tense and uncomfortable.

Then this weekend I started worrying. I've applied at dozens of places, but I'm worried about how long it will take me to get a job. I can only stretch my money so far. Today I'm going to try a temp agency. I don't really have experience in office work (I'm a graphic artist), but I know I could do it given the chance. So wish me luck and send good vibes my way!

I'm so sorry that happened. It sounds like you are coping okay and have a good attitude. And you are right...all that work stress is gone for good. The horizon is yours. Good luck on your job hunt and keep us posted.

This sounds so trite, but everything DOES happen for a reason. I know that you will not only land butter-side up, but in a better place. I have been fired from some jobs that were very bad for me. While I could never say they did me a favour, I can say that each time it's allowed me to redefine what I really want and need out of a job.
Great big hugs for you, TC!

i COMPLETELY agree with partlycloudy. everything DOES happen for a reason, even if you can't see it right now or even in the next year. i could only find part time work for almost two-three years, luckily my husband was understanding but taking that stupid demeaning part time job is what lead me and literally got me into the position i'm in now. and i can't imagine doing anything else. during those 2-3 years i prayed aLOT and was begining to think i was more than useless and should just accept that no one else wanted to hire me (the whole time still applying to other jobs)
well, i see now VERY clearly that it Did happen for a reason and for the best reason.
Please hang in there.
You WILL be alright, you WILL provail throuogh this.

I'm so sorry you got fired. No matter how you lose a job, it is stressful, even if you do get unemployment. I'm glad though, that you are out of a position that you don't want to be in, and glad that you now have an opportunity to find a job that you will really like, even if it does take a little while.
I hear from my aunt, who lives in Houston, that people in Texas are strong and resilient. If that's true at all, then it's certainly true of you.
Please let us know if there is anything we can do to help.

I want to apologize if my overly zealous posting contributed to your situation. I know Dr. Bob says it's our choice not to read, but when someone responds to a post, I for one am compelled to read it.
I feel bad but I know you'll do very well out of this and get a cubicle, no - an OFFICE - with the computer display shielded from those entering your space.

I really appreciate all the kind words and encouragement. And PC, your posts were sometimes the only thing that got me through the day, so don't apologize. I actually have one of your posts on my refrigerator! It wasn't coming here that got me fired anyway. It was the doing of someone who obviously has alot of problems. And being away from her and my boss makes me realize how much I had changed myself in order to get along with them. It was just a situation I should have gotten out of long ago. And I am happy to be out of it. I just need a job now! Of course, having anxiety doesn't help matters much. I won't feel calm until I have a job. Even then, I will probably not be so complacent at the next job. I've learned that you can get fired without doing anything wrong.
Anyway, thanks everyone! Your word mean alot. I'll keep you updated.

So sorry to hear that you were fired. It always stinks to be "rejected" in any way. And yet, it sounds like things have been quite difficult there lately, and I hope this will be the beginning of a new and brilliant phase of your life. I'm glad to hear you celebrating the fact that you're free from those downer people.

Texas folk are tough and resilient. How else could we have survived the '80s. Hundreds of thousands of jobs were lost in the oil industry - most never to come back. And you can be certain that we didn't get any sympathy. But we didn't need it.

What makes you think you can't get unemployment? Because she said so? That *can* be challenged, and I know of some (including my hubby) that did it successfully.

The reason she doesn't want you to get it is that it costs the company money. Employers pay unemployment tax for each employee. The rate is determined by the turnover rate (mostly by layoff) and the rate can vary many fold. If this is a small company, one person is a large percentage.

Hello....I am really sorry you have to deal with the unemployment thing...and just wanted to relate and give you some hope.

About 7 years ago, after working for an agency for almost 8 years, I got canned, partly due to my hypomanic reactions to Zoloft. (I phoned up a fellow employee and left a ton of swear words and curses on his answering machine.) I know your situation isn't medication related, but the pain of someone who loses a job, *and* has mental health problems on top of that, really can be horrid.

Now, I had to go through a bunch of menial, basic jobs which where far below my real abilities, yet they slowly soothed me back into the world. These days (touch wood!) I have an excellent job in my field of social work, with all the perks and great pay. Yes, it is still often stressful, much because even with meds, stress is really a damning thing, but in many ways I can't believe I have come as far as I have. That's like thousands of tears, of days hiding beneath the covers, and such, later.

It may take you a bit of time (or not too much...don't discourage) but find a job that fits you as best as possible...not the other way around. I know it's really hard with your American economy being so bad as it is, but as that old saying goes, with crises (some, I think), there is opportunity(sp?).

Good luck and the best to you...

Sincerely,
Jay

Hi Texas Chic. I just wanted to tell you that I have several friends who do lots of freelance work as graphic artists. Granted, it takes footwork, hustling and a lot of perseverance to be self-employed, but until you find another job that you like, perhaps you can consider working at home. My friends tracked down publishers they wanted to work for, and now they do book design as well as a few other types of design. It sounds as if this will be a change for the better!

Thanks you guys! I do try to keep the idea in my head that I'm going to get something better, but the doubts still come through. For one thing, this is the first time I've been on my own. I've been in this apartment 2 months. I can't fail so soon! I have to get some money coming in soon if I want to pay rent next month.

As for the unemployment, the reason I don't think I'll get it is because my boss set it up so well. She's smart and sly, and is one of those people that always gets her way. She said I broke company policy when I used my email for personal uses (S obviously told her I wrote her an email trying to get her to talk to me SO THAT WE COULD SOLVE THINGS AND BE ABLE TO WORK!).

My boss also said she had told me if anybody doesn't make a deadline, they're fired. Of course, according to her rules, S should have been fired too.

Then she said that she told me I needed to improve my accuracy and I didn't. Basically, she took my pages and circled every correction so she has proof, although if you compared it to S's pages, its not actually any worse than hers. That's why we proof, to find errors.

Anyway, I just feel she went to alot of trouble to cover her tracks, and I've got nothing. One thing I'm going to tell the unemployment office is that my job was advertised on monster.com on July 23rd – right after the meeting. So she basically has been planning this all along. I am going to fight it, but I don't think its worth spending alot of time on it. She will never give up, and I'm really ready to not have to deal with her ever again .

As for the free lance, I would love to do that, but I don't have the equipment. I don't even have the software. But thanks for the suggestion!

Well this is like a book now so I'm going to wrap this up. Thanks for the support! (Anyone remember those Bartle and James comercials that said that?)

Hi Texaschic,

I left my last job because I couldn't take my boss or my coworkers anymore. The petty games and backstabbing just became too much. I know I'm mentally better off being away from there.

I totally understand why you're considering going temp. I am, too. I call myself the Queen of Employment Losers as I get interviews, but no offers. You will not be in my court- you will get a job. You will, you will, you will. The Queen commands it.

Any luck with the temp agency? What's the latest news?

Good luck!

Thanks Poet! Petty games and backstabbing, that sounds familiar. As for being in your court, I think I may already be there. But yesterday I decided to branch out and applied for several jobs outside my profession. Hopefully one of them will pan out. Thanks for you support!

Thanks Jen! I haven't heard anything from the temp agencies yet. So I decided to branch out and apply for anything I might be remotely qualified for. Graphic Design just seems to be an over saturated market right now. I applied for temporary and part time, as well as full time, at jobs such as; Pharmaceutical Sales, Preschool Teacher, Claims Adjuster, Data Entry, Customer Sevice, Merchandiser, Photographer, and a few more things I didn't really know what they were but I fit the qualifications. So something has GOT to come through. I really hate customer service, but I would like it better than fast food or grocery store work. So we'll see what happens. Keep those good vibes coming!

I'm so sorry to hear that you lost your job. You said you weren't happy there so maybe it is a blessing in disguise. I personally know how hard it is to be looking for a job but I didn't have to do it at a time that I was dealing with depression. My heart goes out to you. Remember when one door closes, another opens. I'm sure you'll find something before long. Try to think positive while looking for a job, I know how hard that is though. Please keep us posted. Angelgirl, you're so sweet. Thank you. Your words mean alot to me.

Well I have two interviews tomorrow. Neither are a permanent solution, but may be good temporary jobs to get me through. Oddly enough, both interviews are in the same city, which is 1 1/2 hours away! I couldn't believe my luck to have both on the same day!

One job is actually there, which is a graphics job, part time, but may go to full time. It would be a lon-n-n-g drive, but would only be 2 or 3 days a week. At this point I don't even care where it is. I'll worry about that when I get to it.

The 2nd I don't know where it will be, that's just where they're doing the interviews. The 2nd is a merchandising job at a Halloween store, which I think sounds kind of fun. Maybe it will be my fun intermittent job that I can look back fondly on. All I know is I'm ready to work! I never thought I'd get so sick of staying home all day.

Anyway, wish me luck and send good vibes! Thanks everyone!
