my apartment is in the movies, again

Posted by Larry Hoover on August 31, 2004, at 16:34:22

They're shooting David Cronenberg's "History of Violence" where I live, and I get paid to have my apartment in the scenes. I had Molly Shannon waving out my window to Mathew Broderick (The Music Man), and maybe I'll get something like that again.

Larry,
that's very cool! Wouldn't it be awesome if you got some kind of walk-on or background part? :)

That's cool! For some reason I think you live in Canada. Is that right?

I grew up in West LA, not far from MGM and 20th Century Fox. I used to drive by the MGM back lot all the time. My high school was the exterior for an early 60s show called "Mr. Novak". Every so often I'd be somewhere where something was being shot.

I used to watch "Streets of San Francisco" and laugh over how the actors would exit one landmark and show up at another one all the way across town. Like leaving stepping off the Golden Gate Bridge and appearing in Golden Gate Park, about three miles away. It put the Star Trek transporter to shame.

Yes, correct. I live about one hour northeast of Toronto, also known as Hollywood North.

They virtually shut down my little town during shooting. This summer, they shot "Ice Princess" here, and they covered the streets with snow, despite it being over 90 in the shade.....people walking around in parkas, etc.

I think they like shooting here because we let them shut the town down. For money.

Ya, I love that kind of stuff, when you KNOW what's really on the screen.

My favorite is when the characters find parking where parking can't ever be found. Totally destroys my suspension of disbelief.

How about so many people never actually going to their jobs everyday?

what gets me is when they're in Mythical Small-Town America and it's all quaint and lovely and the downtown area is vibrant and alive, no strip mall ugliness anywhere, and everyone is well-off despite that there's no industry anyplace. Maybe this is a clue-- Mythical Small-Town America is actually Canada.

Apparently, that is exactly what they concluded. Also, the buildings are quite old, so we are also a stand-in for the early 1900's. There have been some amazing antique cars driving by, during some movie shoots. It also doesn't hurt that the Canuck buck is a tad smaller than yours.
