My birthday plans

Posted by tabitha on March 31, 2004, at 10:30:13

Ugh, I'm trying to avoid another solitary birthday, so I asked a friend to get together. Now I'm regretting it. We haven't crystallized plans, in fact haven't spoken, only exchanged phone messages. He said he'd get together, but sounded tentative about what we'll do. I remembered why I don't rely on this friend much. Typically when we get together we either do what he wants, or if we do what I want, then he kind of ruins it for me by being fussy about things like temperature, air quality, smells, noise, and food selection. Everywhere we go, something is a problem for him. Not a person who's easy to be around at all. Well it's my birthday dang it and I want to do what I want, and I don't want to be worrying about someone else's sensitivities. In fact I think I want to go out for ice cream sundaes. Banana splits, yum!

I realize there's little chance he'd drive to where I want to go, endure the noisy restaurant, and eat ice cream with me. I'll probably just have to back out of our tentative plan.

Then... do I go out alone for ice cream, or buy all the stuff and make it at home? I'd end up with 2 kinds of ice cream and 3 toppings and marschino cherries and nuts and whipped cream all leftover. Crimeny, there has to be someone else to invite.

ooh pick me! i like sundaes!

tabitha

why leftover ice cream does not sound like a problem at all! rather an embarrassment of riches. frozen liquid gold, a reward for a long day and a life well-lived. then you can have a week-long birthday celebration!

i'd go for ice cream with you. but failing that, if you want a virtual ice cream party, please set the time (remembering that i'm pst) and i will buy some ice cream and we can sin together. happy birthday!

ps - i went out by myself on my birthday (my friend at work ditched me) and it was less than pleasant ... mostly because of an unpleasant run-in with an ex at the movie theatre ... however your mileage may vary. do whatever makes you happy!

Tabitha:

I would not waste a birthday on someone who is not going to put you first. I suggest that it's better to pick that one activity or treat that you love and enjoy it fully simply for the sake of pleasing yourself. Compromising your enjoyment of the day to get the companionship of someone who may make it less happy is probably not the way to go.

While having someone physically present to share the day with is nice, appreciating that you have friends who care for you, though from a distance, is, in my opinion, more rewarding.

Whatever you do, enjoy your day.

Whenever your birthday is..HAPPY BIRTHDAY..I would go to the place yourself and maybe meet your friend later at your place for company that way you can go eat the ice cream where and how you like it none of his issues and not spend it alone..by seeing him late..like having your cake and eating it too :)

You could always invite me and I could give you my red jacket and boots to match your watch... Happy birthday!!!!! It's hard to say in this situation. I have a friend who is very similar. She is snappy to waiters, complains about the food, complains about everything. But, she's my friend and I love her dearly, even if we can't always agree on the service or where to go. So, I guess you could tell him upfront you want it to go your way? I just try to tell my friend to relax. And when she complains about waiting, I say "It hasn't been that long" or "Well, the girl is cute, so it's worth the wait" or "The food is very good" or "Well, that gives us more time to talk" So, if you go with your friend, take the opportunity to try to point the things out that perhaps your friend doesn't realize. Or ignore it. Or run out to your car and scream if you must. Or, back to plan A and invite me. I will compromise and do whatever you want. I'm not picky, promise! (And the whole time, jsut think, "At least I'm not fussy and perhaps I can create a less fussy person!" That seems to work for me. I agree though, it's sometimes frustrating. My old man won't eat with her and she asked why. I had to tell her. That was quite a conversation, let me tell you!)

I hope you have a great birthday whether you spend it with a friend or friends, or that very very special person who is Tabitha.

I'd be happy to join you in a banana split if you like. You can have a Babble party and we all promise to pig out on ice cream and cherries right along with you. :)

I think you should invite me. I have been named the ICQ - the Ice Cream Queen.

I like Dinah's idea of an online ice cream orgy. Just let me know when it will be and I'll be there!

Happy birthday!

Alright, I'll provide party hats and favors and an ice cream bonanza. You all can enjoy virtual banana splits or else use this excuse to treat yourself for real. The day is Sunday April 4..

What is in a banana split anyway? Well I guess I just go to the store and buy all the ice cream toppings that look appealing, plus cherries, whipped cream, and nuts. Right? And bananas of course. And ice cream.

Ummm. That's the night of our bon voyage party for my brother, but right after that I'll be there. Or before that. Celebrations at my parents' don't last long.

What time is this party?

Must admit I have mixed feelings about real whipped cream. Sure it's delicious, but it's so grown up. The spray can has the fun factor. BUT for you, I'll break out my mixer and whip and whip and whip...

Dunno.. all day long? I'll stock up on ice cream the night before. Guests can drop in anytime they want. I'll crank the party music (how about that Little Marcy stuff Medusa posted? Perfect for a birthday celebration) and hand out pointy hats to all comers.

P.S. do you think margaritas go OK with banana splits?

Oh, OK. And I suppose you want some fancy non-standard banana variety too? Maybe a plantain? And soy whipped cream? A blueberry instead of a cherry? Fine. Noooo problem. ;-)

Wow, a creative challenge. Maybe something in papier mache? I'll make up a batch of wheat paste and set out some newspaper for you. It really needs to have a red tongue.. I'll dig up some felt. And oh, what about a rhinestone collar? I've got rhinestones.

I am proudly entering my early forties.

*Sorry I have a gluten allergy...so I will pass on the wheat paste. I bloat up almost immediatly. I am feeling a bloat coming on just discussing this.
Maybe a lot of scotch tape...I seem to be okay with that.
>It really needs to have a red tongue..
* Boy you aren't kidding I need lots of red tong....
wow that doesn't sound like I meant it to sound....
I guess I'll just discretely back away from that comment.
I like the idea we can drop in at any time of the day...I get up real early...and I am such a party animal (dog) I will stay all day.
I do need a nap later in the afternoon.
I will bring my powder blue bankie....
Who else is coming?

The forties were my favorite decade so far.

Oops! Sorry. I'll bet you somewhere there's a website with a gluten-free papier mache paste recipe.

> I will bring my powder blue bankie....

fine, I'll set up a hammock in the backyard for napping. You know, I think the best nap I ever took was in a teepee.

Anyone who's anyone my dear!

I do think they're turning out to be a good decade. I'd hate to think it's downhill after the 40s though. I'm hoping for ever increasing goodness til I die.
