Checking in, long time no post for me :-)

Posted by DSCH on March 20, 2004, at 23:59:23

Just thought the folks out there who remember me should know that I went back on magnesium pemoline in late Dec. and just recently this has helped me put my mind back in order. I still take vitamins and such, but I am no longer blowing big chunks of time and money on supplements.

I am seriously considering going back to graduate school, but in a different field.

Seeing as I already got the "permanent head damage", I might as well have a degree to show for it sometime! ;-)

What kind of "permanent head damage" did graduate school cause you?

It's partly a joke, look at the initals of that phrase. ;-)

Having to work/study in a PhD program in a physical science under the handicaps of ADD (inattentive-type) was enormously stressful and I became dysthymic. I got locked into a downward spiral, basically. Dr. Daniel Amen calls this "the Wall". You go as far as your coping mechanisms take you then you hit it and crash.

With my head clearing up I can put things in proper perspective. Joy at having clarity and having this new perspective on my past helps to nip depressive thinking in the bud.

I can see that not many of the folks who read my posts last year check 'social' regularly. :-p

Something similar happened to me, but in a Social Science. And the outcome was more depressing than dysthmia. Not to belittle your diagnosis, of course.

I wish there were some way for the professors to know who can take the pressure before the process begins! I'd imagine they try, but it's hard to know in advance. I had stood up to heavy pressure as an undergrad, so it probably surprised people that I cracked during and after grad school.

I am surprised you want to return to that type of environment. But you know what's best for yourself. Best wishes!
