met with misadventure - a euphemism?

Posted by octopusprime on March 6, 2004, at 0:34:11

i was reading a news story about a missing man today.

the police said they searched his apartment and they believe "he may have met with misadventure"

seems like a euphemism to me ... have people heard this as a euphemism for suicide? murder by getting involved in the wrong crowd? i'm thinking it's a euphemism for suicide ... just wonder if anybody here has heard of what this police euphemism really means.

I'm thinking it means something along the lines of he met with foul play. Perhaps he isn't just missing on his own accord (like he went on vacation and forgot to tell someone else). More like something bad happened to him. I don't think I've ever heard that euphemism used to indicate suicide. But, it could be.

Howdy stranger. :)

Around here, it's considered another phrase for foul play. They've got reason to believe that something bad has happened, but they can't say it with any certainty.

Reads to me like they suspect foul play of an undetermined nature.

Euphemisms are strange and funny--this news story not funny, I know, because of what may have happened to this poor guy--but the euphemistic words are funny when you stop and think about them, which I rarely do.

Met with misadventure. You got me thinking.......

I met with Miss Adventure last week to discuss the future of the movie I had in mind for her to star in, that I'd spent a decade and a half holed up in my little walk-up boarding house writing, all in anticipation of this very day last week when I would meet with her. A kind of oddball, low budget indie thing about a quirky little town where the traditional beauty contest has this twist to it, you know, a twist where all the contestants have to show that they are adventurers of a kind. Miss Adventure was about to describe to me her particular brand of adventure when........

.....a dark and eerie tale going back to days of long ago and faraway, a tale so mysterious that few alive today would even be able to comprehend it were it to be told, a tale that if told, *shiver* well, I can't even begin to mention the kinds of things that could occur if this tale were to be brought out of the vault of family secrecy, for the nature of the very universe would be altered, or so the legend goes, a tale of how of how, long ago and far away, when their earliest ancestors had met with misadventure,......

It is 2004 and I pray that Miss Adventure won't be tragically scarred when she finds out that her great=greatgrandfather invented a feminine product. Yes, he was before his time and right after he invented it......
