What's your favorite romantic comedy?

Posted by Dinah on October 11, 2003, at 21:00:31

It's a good way to lighten my mood, so I watched How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days. So I'm trying to decide which other ones to watch. What are your favorites?

I still think I have to hold for Foul Play with Chevy Chase and Goldie Hawn. It just appealed for some reason.

Or When Harry Met Sally. Or Romancing the Stone. Or.. Or...

What do you all think?

Hi, I am Laura. Mine is Breakfast at Tiffany's. I absolutely love Audrey Hepburn. I absolutely love Tiffany's as well. :)

I do love Audrey Hepburn. Such a lovely and gracious lady. Roman Holiday? Funnyface?

Yes! Gracious was her middle name. She is one actress who did not let stardom get to her head. Never was a negative thing said of her. She did so much for other people (and countries) and it was not a publicity stunt.

The only movie I do own is Breakfast at Tiffany's. It actually was my parent's movie (beta). I have seen Funnyface. Other than that, I am more of a documentary buff.

I enjoy documentaries as well, on occasion. Especially history. But they're not quite the perker uppers that I needed today. :)

Two comedies I absolutely loved, although they're not necessarily romantic, are The Nutty Professor (Eddie Murphy) and the Naked Gun movies (Leslie Nielsen and Priscilla Presley). And definitely When Harry Met Sally and Sleepless in Seattle.

Last movie I went to, Meet the Parents. I was pregnant with my 2 yr old. Funny thing is, I got in at a child's price. My husband and I still laugh.

I thought it was great! Too bad it got bad reviews. Benjamin Bratt is a cutie. My favorite part is the end when she tries to rescue the winner of the beauty pageant.

I like SABRINA, both the old and new versions. The older version was with Audrey Hepburn, Humphrey Bogart and William Holden. Usually, I don't like remakes, but I do like the newer version of SABRINA with Julia Ormond, Harrison Ford and Greg Kinnear. It's not strictly a comedy, but it's very romantic!

Thanks, Dinah, for this thread.
Peace at last :)

Here are some more of my favorite romantic comedies:

IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT (1934) with Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert. A classic!

ROXANNE (1987) with Steve Martin and Daryl Hannah. Steve Martin's remake of "Cyrano de Bergerac."

ANNIE HALL (1977) with Woody Allen and Diane Keaton (need I say more?).

PLAY IT AGAIN, SAM (1972) with Woody Allen and Diane Keaton.

In the previous post I said that ROXANNE was Steve Martin's remake of "Cyrano de Bergerac," but that is incorrect. ROXANNE is a romantic comedy written by Steve Martin that is based on the Cyrano story.

yep Sleepless in Seattle gets my fave vote for this category. Also loved You've Got Mail because it's our (me & my partner's) story, sort of. he hates both of them!

Oh my goodness you have to see "Anger Management" with Adam Sandler, Jack Nicholson, and Marisa Tomei, this is a new one in video stores. It is absoulutely HILARIOUS. It is a love story too but not quite as obvious as maybe some of the others mentioned here.

I see I still have a few to divert myself with. :)

And yes, I loved Sabrina, both versions. The original was perfect, but so is Harrison Ford (until his latest movie anyway).

But now I've thought of another perfect original, perfect remake, favorite.

The Philadelphia Story and the Grace Kelly remake of that.

Do you mean HOLLYWOOD HOMICIDE? I haven't seen that one yet.

Thanks for mentioning that. I just looked it up in my trusty film encyclopedia, and I see that the remake is a musical, HIGH SOCIETY. I will add that to my "must see" list.

Another romantic comedy favorite is AS GOOD AS IT GETS with Jack Nicholson and Helen Hunt. I read that Nicholson and Diane Keaton have just finished a movie together. I don't know the name of it. I think it will be out in a few months. And then I heard a RUMOR that Nicholson and Keaton are dating, but I don't believe it. He usually dates women who are young enough to be his daughters, and Keaton doesn't fall into that category.

Well then I don't mean to ruin it for you. I must confess I was not in the best mood when I watched Hollywood Homicide.

I liked High Society, but then again, I have a weakness for films of that era. I get a fair amount of enjoyment from just viewing the wardrobe. :) But honestly, I liked it. I actually own both versions on video and like watching them back to back.

I think As Good As It Gets is the only Nicholson film I like. Unless I want to get really depressed and watch Terms of Endearment. I'm guessing he usually does a higher quality of film than I prefer. My favorite is 2 1/2 star. Two and three star are worth a shot, but lower or higher and I tend to avoid them. (hangs head in embarassment)

Actually, I don't think it matters how many stars they have. Unless you are taking or teaching a course in film, movies are for entertainment and diversion, so you should see whatever you enjoy.
