Egomaniac shrinks

Posted by Cecilia on November 3, 2001, at 3:43:02

I just read an article in the on-line "Psychiatric Times" (www/mhsource.com) in which the author states his belief that side effects, paradoxical reactions to meds and refractoriness to treatment are basically symbolic attempts to have a relationship with the pdoc. ARRGHH!!!! Do shrink training programs deliberately cultivate this egomania or are the candidates preselected for swollen heads before they start?

shrink the shrinks.

The author obviously needs treatment.

They've got to keep themselves in business, don't they? What a scam.

Cecilia - We all know that psychiatrists were those smart geeks we used to tease and pick on in school. Now they have power and money and are paying us back for the abuse that we heaped on them. - Cam

The trouble is, I was one of those smart "picked upon" geeks myself. I guess I should have become a shrink, but I was very naive and thought there was probably a rule that you couldn`t unless you were "normal".

You mean this one? Ugh!

http://www.mhsource.com/pt/p011140.html

"But medications can never be relational, much as patients sometimes attempt to have relationships with us through them, symbolically mediated by "side effects," paradoxical responses and refractoriness to treatment"

-----
And then when they lose business they believe it's a managed care conspiracy. Oh well. On the bright side, I believe they're having lots of success using medication to treat delusions like his. - Jane
