Mr. Tambourine Man

Posted by sar on October 27, 2001, at 21:00:37

Hey! Mr Tambourine Man, play a song for me,
I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to.
Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me,
In the jingle jangle morning I'll come following you.

Though I know that evenin's empire has returned into sand,/ Vanished from my hand
Left me blindly here to stand but still not sleeping.
My weariness amazes, I'm branded on my feet,
I have no one to meet
And the ancient empty street's too dead for dreaming.

Hey! Mr Tambourine Man, play a song for me,
I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to.
Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me,
In the jingle jangle morning I'll come following you.

Take me on a trip upon your magic swirlin' ship,
My senses have been stripped, my hands can't feel to grip,./ My toes too numb to step, wait only for my boot heels/ To be wanderin'.
I'm ready to go anywhere, I'm ready for to fade
Into my own parade, cast your dancing spell my way,
I promise to go under it.

Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me,
I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to.
Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me,
In the jingle jangle morning I'll come followin' you.

Though you might hear laughin', spinnin, swingin' madly across the sun,/
It's not aimed at anyone, it's just escapin' on the run
And but for the sky there are no fences facin'.
And if you hear the vague traces of skippin' reels of rhyme/
To your tambourine in time, it's just a ragged clown behind,/
I wouldn't pay it any mind, it's just a shadow you're
Seein' that he's chasing.

Hey! Mr Tambourine Man, play a song for me,
I'm not sleepy and and there is no place I'm going to.
Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me,
In the jingle jangle morning I'll come followin' you.

Then take me disappearin' through the smoke rings of my mind,/
Down the foggy ruins of time, far past the frozen leaves,/
The haunted, frightened trees, out to the windy beach,
Far from the twisted reach of crazy sorrow.
Yes, to dance beneath the diamond sky with one hand waving free,/
Silhouetted by the sea, circled by the circus sands,
With all memory and fate driven deep beneath the waves,
Let me forget about today until tomorrow.

Hey! Mr Tambourine Man, play a song for me,
I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to.
Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me,
In the jingle jangle morning I'll come followin' you.

--"Mr. Tambourine Man," by Bobby Dylan...

Thanks, sar, ever listen to "I shall be released"?
Now THAT's a good Dylan tune (not that I don't like Tambourine Man).

that's another of my favorites.

do you have *the essential Bob Dylan*? 2-CD set chronoclogically ordered.

it has both tambourine man and i shall be released (which is a really soulful, *releasing* song that i like to put on repeat...)

I got a laugh out of a recent interview with Mr. Dylan where he says he's really happy to not be famous anymore so he can just do what he wants.
Most of what he does is fine with me, but then I'm way past forty.

I suppose he means he isn't followed around by swarms of groupies and the press... Just large-ish crowds...

Moi aussi, me too, he's the grooviest... Thanks, Sar. Emmylou Harris does a cover of 'Every Grain of Sand' on the "Wrecking Ball" album, nice.

sar: That's great! Maybe one more?

A worried man with a worried mind
No one in front of me and nothing behind
There's a woman on my lap and she's drinking champagne
Got white skin, got assassin's eyes
I'm looking up into the sapphire tinted skies
I'm well dressed, waiting on the last train

Bridge #1:
Standing on the gallows with my head in a noose
Any minute now I'm expecting all hell to break loose

Chorus
People are crazy and times are strange
I'm locked in tight, I'm out of range
I used to care, but things have changed

This place ain't doing me any good
I'm in the wrong town, I should be in Hollywood
Just for a second there I thought I saw something move
Gonna take dancing lessons do the jitterbug rag
Ain't no shortcuts, gonna dress in drag
Only a fool in here would think he's got anything to prove

Bridge #2
Lot of water under the bridge, Lot of other stuff too
Don't get up gentlemen, I'm only passing through

(chorus)

I've been walking forty miles of bad road
If the bible is right, the world will explode
I've been trying to get as far away from myself as I can
Some things are too hot to touch
The human mind can only stand so much
You can't win with a losing hand

Bridge #3
Feel like falling in love with the first woman I meet
Putting her in a wheel barrow and wheeling her down the street

(chorus)

I hurt easy, I just don't show it
You can hurt someone and not even know it
The next sixty seconds could be like an eternity
Gonna get low down, gonna fly high
All the truth in the world adds up to one big lie
I'm in love with a woman who don't even appeal to me

Bridge #4
Mr. Jinx and Miss Lucy, they jumped in the lake
I'm not that eager to make a mistake

(chorus)

Yep, good song, part of my childhood. I now have a greatest hits CD the old stuff)that I like to listen to when in a certain mood.

Can't say I'm real impressed with Dylan in recent years, though. He used to be much more musical, if you ask me.

i didn't like *love and theft,* his latest album. the old stuff is my favorite too.

i read in the paper today that he's busy writing an autobiography...cool, because i think all of the other books about him have been "unauthorized."

oh, and he was so cute in the sixties...
