Overbearing Mother

Posted by Manny Santoya on December 18, 2005, at 16:29:21

I'm in my mid forties, but I have a mother who feels she needs to tell me about the everyday, commonplace issues about adult life, as if I have never dealt with them before. For one example (out of many, many examples), I'm purchasing a car for the first time in 8 years. Although I have had other cars, she felt the need to "news flash" me that I'll have to pay monthly car notes and car insurance payments. It truly upsets me that my mother treats me as if I am a moron or a sixteen-year-old first-time buyer. I don't know how to handle her overbearing behavior. I usually get upset with her, I over-react, and say ugly things that I regret later.

Can anybody help me with a new behavior that will be respectful to her and yet get the message across to her that her advice is neither needed nor wanted?

Try this book: "Coping With Difficult People". It worked for me when I had to deal with my father's GF.

I.
