When is it too much therapy?

Posted by Verloren on June 7, 2010, at 22:07:27

I see my T twice a week now. When I started it was only once a week and I asked to go up to twice. Lately, I'm thinking 3 times a week would be great (although expensive).

The thing is, I went to twice so that one session could focus on the current events and day-to-day and the other session would be using the art therapy and discussing how the past may or may not relate to the current.

But lately, I'm feeling completely overwhelmed by the current events. I'm having 3 major life-changing events: returned to school, new position at work, and moving into a bigger place because my grandmother is moving in with me so I can take care of her. Not to mention the regular stuff too.

I feel like we never get to the past and discussions about my childhood, because of everything going on right now.

I'm wondering what the best solution is, so I'm asking my babbler friends.

Do I ask for more sessions, go up to 3?

Do I try to find some alternative therapy solution?

Do I just grin and bear it?

Obviously, I'm a bit biased toward more sessions. I wonder if it's also a mixed matter of me wanting to see her more? Also, I'm not certain she'd agree to more. So what should I do if I'm rejected?

The therapy relationship is different with increased frequency. I went three times a week for six years and only cut back to twice a week due to money concerns. I do think you are able to dig deeper and stay at a deeper level from session to session.

You could always try it for a month or so and see how you feel. One great thing about most therapists, they let you set the pace and no decision is irreversible.

I liked going three times a week but am adjusting at twice a week.

My T would never see me more than once a week, though there was a period when I wanted to sss him twice. He didn't want the tranference feelings to get out of hane. He said this intense already. I loom large in yoor mind. Imagine how mcch more intense this would become if I saw you twice a week. I would loom huge in your mind.

I see my T tomorrow. I plan to request several things that, in my deluded opinion, will help this therapy process. One will be the additional day for one month as Annierose suggested.

I'm hoping she'll agree to it or, we will discuss how that could increase my thoughts of her leading my transference to get out of hand, as emmanuel stated with his T.

I'll keep you both posted. :-)

I don't know...can you go up to three?
I wish I could go to two. Will you talk with your T about it? and about how you're not sure about what you should do?
I usually see my pdoc once every 2 weeks, but I've see him a couple of times two weeks in a row when he thought I needed it
I got some extra sessions for a while, twice a week, alternating with once a week, but I don't think I'm going to get that back.
I think that sometimes I can manage to use art, writing, whatever to deal with some stuff between and share it.
I think I should do some type of therapy once a day :-)

I really anxious and nervous for the appointment tonight. I don't know why. Ada doesn't usually make me nervous, but I wish it was over so I would have my answer already.

Also, it's been raining all day so I feel gray like the weather. :(

GAH! I hate feeling this way. And I hate wondering if I'm wrong for wanting more time. I went through the notes I've been writing over the past few weeks, along with some other resources I've been wanting to get her opinion on and realized how behind I really am. But then I think about life before therapy when there was no one to vent to, no one to ask advice about therapeutic resources, no one to talk about my past with, no one to give me insight as why I make the choices that I do...

and I wonder if it's even worth it. Struggling with these weird feelings, thoughts and anxiety for the next unknown number months, is this something I really want?

Excellent!! You were so worried going into that appointment I'm glad you had the courage to still ask her. It's a great feeling when our fears are only that - because our therapists do want what is best for us.

That's great! And it's great that you asked, even though you were worried about it.
