(crossposted) PTSD/Depression/Abuse survivor

Posted by invioletlight on November 21, 2008, at 2:26:54

Hi Babblers,

My girlfriend is currently suffering a terrible bout of depression. She is a sexual and physical abuse survivor--the abuse lasted many, many years and was perpetrated by multiple people--and also has PTSD rather severely. She will often "disappear" from reality and have vivid flashbacks, in which she cannot hear or see me.

It's getting really bad and I'm working, with limited funds, on trying to get her some mental health care. We're trying to go through the county, as she has no health insurance and is currently unable to work because of her depression.

Does anyone out there have any advice for the partner of someone going through this? I've struggled with panic attacks and anxiety my whole life so I somewhat understand, but would like to hear from those who have experienced this most directly. How can I be of the most help?

Thanks,
IV

well first i have to say THANK YOU for caring so much as to even ask the question.

i wish my DH were 1/2 as understanding and compassionate as you.
all i can respond is what 'i' would wish i could have.
and mostly that's for someone to Just 'be there'. to listen when i need it, to hold me when i can't use words. and to let me feel protected and safe.

when i'm 'in those places' you talked about your girlfriend has been in, those are the most helpful things.
sometimes i need to talk about it, othertimes i need to just be near someone i trust.

also doing what you can to get her professional help is Key. You are SO great in helping her that way as i'm sure her depression can be debilitating. sometimes i feel 'its not worth it', but since i already found a T and see her regularly i can tell myself 'its not worth it but i'll go anyway.
some T's will work from a sliding scale. mine does, and it helps Tremendously.

best wishes and stick around.
b2c.

Hi IV,
If you live in the US, there is the possiblity of receiving help from Medicaid. Or have you tried that? Or do you not live in the US?

Hey guys,

Thanks for your kind notes! I hope I am on the right track.

As for the healthcare issue, I don't know what the qualifications for Medicaid are. Currrently, my GF *has* no income, as she's been unable to work.

Honestly, I'm not sure *what* to do... At this point, something like medical m*rijuana would be easier to get than psych drugs for her. It's so messed up!!

Is she unable to get unemployment?
Just a thought, not sure her and your exact situation.
Sorry you're having such a hard time! I can't imagine =(
