So I was supposed to volunteer Monday and I called and cancelled. Was supposed to volunteer yesterday but it got cancelled by the person I was gonna work with. I was supposed to volunteer today and I drove down there. Then I turned around and went home. I wasn't even that anxious. I could have done it. I'm just so upset with myself. I think I'm just scared bc I don't know what it's gonna be like. This is my first time volunteering there.
I called my T and left a message. I hope she calls back. In group yesterday, she told me she was out of her office a few days ago when I called and she didn't call me back. She should put that in her voicemail message..
I just feel like I need encouragement from someone telling me that I can do it and it's hard but I'll be happier if I do it.

If you get over that bump in the road-- the anxiety about entering a new situation--- (which, by the way, most people experience, even if not as acutely, it's pretty universal-- so you're not alone)-- you'll probably really enjoy it and feel good about yourself, too.
In DBT, they tell you come up with some self-encouraging statements, or other ways of handling your anxieties, before you actually go. For example, at home, you can imagine how you'll feel when you drive to the place--and then practicing breathing-- or think of some positive thoughts you could use in the car--(remembering that the anxiety won't last forever, or just saying something like "I can do it"-- or whatever feels right to you). Then when you actually drive down, you'll be prepared, and have in mind some things to do to get yourself over the anxious time.
You'll get there, I'm sure-- and it's great that you want to volunteer. I'm sure your efforts will be appreciated.

Thanks WaterSapphire and Nadezda. It really helps to hear encouraging word from you guys. I've been doing a lot better driving. Now I just need to do some other things. I see my T next week and I think that will help too. Thank you!!!
