Attachment Disorder?

Posted by chiron on July 27, 2008, at 0:52:56

I went to a new med dr. He concluded I had an attachment disorder based on the facts that I didn't have a very hard time when my dad died, and that I am 35 and still have not had a serious relationship.
When I told my therapist this, she said she hated lables and didn't think I was that extreme.
I admit I have some attachment issues, mostly from being in a depressive state. It can detach yourself from the world, or make you want to hid from it. I have friends, according to my therapist I have a "lot" of friends.
And the romantic relationship issue? I have man issues. I sought out therapy for that, and she basically said that she enjoyed talking to me but she didn't feel like she was helping.
However, the "attachment issue" may be part of the reason I get this anxious loneliness that I hate. Even when I don't feel like doing anything.
I don't have a traumatic childhood, it wasn't great but it wasn't bad. I just can't think of how any therapy could help w/ attachment disorders. I've read books. I've already had a handful of therapists for depression mostly.
And I believe some of it is biological. If my mood is good (like when I first tried Adderall), I don't get the lonely anxiousness.

Perhaps almost everyone who is feeling enough distress to seek out therapy could be said to have something amiss in their early attachment experiences. Much of therapy is designed to help people feel more securely attached- first to their therapists, and later to important people outside of therapy. A number of posters have written about that- one that comes to mind is Seldom Seen. If this hasn't happened at all for you, you may have been seeing therapists who aren't optimally trained for your situation. Please don't think that an attachment disorder can't be helped.

From what I know, real attachment disorder includes some pretty extreme behavior, like inappropriate attachments--feeling you're going to die without a person you've only recently met, e.g.. I don't know you, but it doesn't sound like the things you listed are enough.

I get that anxious emptiness too. It is also a characteristic of a lot of diagnoses less extreme than attachment disorder. Like you, it's helped considerably with medication, and it's also helped by having a therapist who is consistently there for me. I am 33, and I can't say I haven't had a serious relationship, but I've certainly had some pretty messed up ones, and nobody's ever suggested I have attachment disorder. The most is BPD, and most other people have thought even that's a little extreme.

Sounds like this guy isn't even a therapist, to boot.

Chiron is he older as my youngest Daughter is almost 34 and isn't even dating anymore. So I feel maybe the older generation feels we should have a relationship. So many problems for you right now. I feel for you. Love Phillipa

I'M DEFINITLY NOT THAT EXTREME, NO IRRATIC BEHAVIOR FROM ME. I'M SHY W/ MEN, LACKING RELATIONSHIP OPPORTUNITIES (IF I APPROVE) I THINK DEPRESSION OBVIOUSLY AFFECTS THE WHOLE RELATIONSHIP THING FOR ME.

I'M GLAD TO KNOW I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE OUT THERE WITH ANXIOUS EMPTINESS. AND THANKS FOR YOUR ENCOURAGING WORDS.

Yip, he's pretty old. I also live in Mormon Utah where people are wondering why you are not married by 30.

Thanks Phillipa

Ya, life's hope sucks for me right now. Dr. said to try a relationship. Dr. said that I have an attachment disorder. No more offered treatments.
AND these doctors aren't even on my insurance plan. All of the other ones are not accepting new patients! Another UTAH thing - lack of psychiatrists. I don't know if it's because we have the highest depression rate or what.
