Your rituals of therapy

Posted by healing928 on July 25, 2008, at 10:52:14

Do you have any rituals you do before? I usually bring a drink. I don't know, even though I connected well with my former t i always had to have something in my hand. I guess something to do when talking about something that made me anxious.

I bring in flowers, something to drink (non-alcoholic) and candles.

The ritual is as follows: I turn out the lights, he turns on the music; we toast...

Hey, this isn't therapy it is a a DATE!!

I used to bring in delicious food I cooked, but he asked me to stop.

I think through what was said on the drive back home to extract out and codify any insights of value.

Sometimes I stop at the market first and pick up a steak or something. I'll sit outside when I get back, relax with Chill Out music and watch the sun set over DC, the planes land at National Airport and get a little loaded.

A glass of wine after a session is my ritual. I may be self-medicating, or acting out. But it helps me relax, unwind, and focus on what we'd talked about.

There is nothing wrong with that. I used to get a little loaded *before* therapy--1 or 2 beers, margaritas, etc. Once we switched our session time and I found myself drinking wine at 7 in the morning. (I had to concede that perhaps I had a little bit of a problem that morning :)).

I started this was after I told my therapist I was attracted to her (couple years ago) and I found it excruciating to talk about. Several months ago I told her I used to do that, and she'd never noticed! I must have hid it well because she watches me like a hawk, even leaning down to see my face when I look at the floor.

It didn't really help that much. Only getting completely trashed would have taken away the level of anxiety I had then, and even I draw the line at going to therapy completely trashed :)

I take myself to dinner at the same place every week, order the same thing, and sometimes have a beer but usually just lemonaid. And I sit there, sometimes for hours, writing in my journal - reflecting on the session and my week. Sometimes I think my ritual is almost as important for learning about myself as the therapy itself.
