Sigh. Shoo me away if you see me.

Posted by Dinah on July 19, 2008, at 16:58:09

I've been spending too much time here. I'm going to lose my job and thus my therapist if I don't focus on work for a while, so I'm going to try to turn off babble for a few days. Easier said than done, I fear.

Especially since I keep wondering whether I should cancel the appointment with the female hypnotherapist and choose a male hypnotherapist instead. I might be more likely to relax.

And since I fully experienced this morning what I've been trying to distract myself from for the last few weeks. Not pretty. I think I'm sinking into depression more than a bit. Maybe from having a couple of viruses in a row. The upside is that I've lost a few pounds...

Still, if I'm going to distract myself from feeling horrible, I need to do it with work, or I'll feel even more horrible from the consequences.

So shoo me away if you see me.

No shooing ... your presence is welcomed here.

But I do get what you are saying. Sometimes the computer is a wonderful distraction and a "time sucker-upper" (a grown-up word, don't you think?).

Those gloomy clouds seem to be popping up everywhere. I just put on "All Summer Long" by Kid Rock and danced to break my b*tchy mood ... at least it made my son + husband smile.

I hope you feel better soon and feel productive at work.

Hi Dinah,
When you're done with some work, reward-ify yourself with some babble, just set a timer and get on with it if you find yourself lingering over a suspicious post...

p.s. I miss you too

Administrating isn't my idea of a reward.

If I reward myself with Babble, I'll post here on Psychology about the topic I enjoy, and which originally engaged me to stay on Babble.

Thanks :) (nm) » Midnightblue

I hope it helped. :)

I have this strong desire to wind myself around my therapist's calves like a kitten. Or jump up on his lap and burrow deep deep inside.

I haven't felt like this for a very long time.

That makes a lot of sense to me. I wouldn't consider administrating a reward either. But if it would help you get your work done, why not make a /psychology/ post your reward?

I'm gonna go back to jumping on my bed so that my sister-in-law will remake it. Apparently my h's OCD is contagious.

This post makes me what to sing--- shoo fly don't bother me, shoo fly don't bother me.

Of course I don't think you are a fly, but I just forgot about that addicting song.

And I wonder if I am responding to this post, am I not helping by keeping you away.

But for some reason I don't think you want to stay away.

Some reason I think there is something on your mind...that is really keeping you from working...

Yup I think you could be right. So Dinah what is it really? Phillipa and I wouldn't want to be a deputy a lot of work and criticism doesn't raise self-esteem. Are you thinking of quitting again? Love Phillipa

Actually I hope you don't leave because I think you offer alot of insight with your answers.

But, since you can't lose your job.....here is an idea
Make it like a reward system while at work. So for example, say "I will work for 45 minutes and then because I did, I will go on babble for 15 minutes as a reward for working so hard."
And do something like that all day.

Or.. simply tell your boss that his work will have to wait! LOL! NOT!

Sort of like compartmentalizing tasks...

It works for me.

:)

I think everyone thinks of quitting everything distressing from time to time, as a general answer. Or at least I do. Avoidant is my middle name. But I have no immediate plans to act on those impulses.

However, I really prefer to keep my role as deputy off Psychology as much as possible. Psychology is sort of my haven, and fortunately there isn't all that much overlap. In general I'd rather talk about that sort of thing on Admin. But at the moment, I'd rather forget all about it entirely.

I know you're right. (See my avoidant middle name above.) I have very ambivalent feelings about work, and even off babble I'm having trouble forcing myself to focus.

I really want to be a homemaker, rather than try to do both, and do neither well. However, that would effectively entail giving over all financial control to my husband, which would not be pretty. And it would mean giving up my therapist for the most part. Maybe I could see him every once in a while. Right now that seems unthinkable.

So I'm trying to motivate myself. I was so furious with myself this morning that I got into thoughts of hurting myself if I didn't work. Or, more positively, I realized that the boss who yells at everyone rarely yells at me. I'd always thought it was because he was afraid I'd cry. But he asked for my help the other day, and I realize he often bounces ideas off me or asks for my help. Maybe he not only doesn't want me to cry, but actually respects me and my contributions. If I could internalize that it would help a lot. I'm way more easily led than driven. And if I feel valued and helpful at work, instead of how I feel right now, I'm way more likely to want to do it. Feeling valued and helpful leads me more than money can drive me, I think.

And of course their are nonpsychological reasons too. The virus I had, then the vertigo, then the migraines that I got from the inner ear problems when I looked at words too long, then the other virus I got and still have. Sigh. I think they may have mushified my brain and wrecked my concentration as well as caused me to feel really really down in a way that feels more biological than psychological.

And thank you.

OK get to work; I have to stop, too, so I'll take your experience to heart. But come back; we can't do without you--not to put any pressure on you or anything, but your posts were what initally brought me to babble. They're always so interesting and thought provoking.
But I understand completely. Take care,
antigua
