My pdoc says I used to be like a child

Posted by Deneb on July 9, 2008, at 0:18:00

She told me I used to be like a child and talked about how the old me didn't care about other people.

I don't think I've changed that much. I think her view of me back then is skewed. I wasn't THAT bad, was I?

I feel kind of weird about this. Did my pdoc find me a handful?

Sometimes we view ourselves as being static when others see great change about us. The important thing is that you always will be Deneb, and you always have been Deneb.

Some of the things you've gone through can certainly be considered a kind of "maturation", but you don't have to start out as a kit in order to mature. I hope in a year I'll be more mature than I am right now, for instance.

Tell your pdoc you're having a hard time interpreting her views

I think that when people use that term, they don't usually mean it literally. It's just that children are associated with certain qualities (sometimes quite incorrectly IMO), so that when people want people to understand what they are trying to say, they use children as an example.

I'm assuming she meant that you were exhibiting a quality that is not uncommon among the young.

Did you ask her at the time what she meant?

I've heard you say many times that you were working hard on one or another interpersonal skill. I'm assuming she's just validating that that work has paid off.

I work and continue to work on interpersonal skills. Babble is relatively good for that. My therapist validates my efforts and successes. It doesn't mean I was awful before, or that he didn't like me before. He's just acknowledging progress.

But if you're in any doubt about what she means, you should ask her. That's another handy interpersonal skill. :)

(And one I still need to work on. I'm good at it with my therapist, but with others, I tend to think that people are judging me in a negative way.)

I think that you have possibly taken this the wrong way Deneb.

It could have been that when you first see her she was`nt saying you were like a child, but maybe she meant you were having childish thoughts ,and maybe ways, but now you`re matured, and your ways are now more mature.

What ever the good things is that what ever has happened over the years of you seeing her , she is telling you that theres been a great improvement, so that must make you feel good.

Keep up the good work .
