OCD-shopping

Posted by Amanda29 on February 10, 2008, at 15:43:53

I have obsessive Compulsive tendencies according to my T, and I have a pretty big problem with spending too much money. I have been ignoring it until now but what can be done about it? I didnt think there was medicine to help--is it just behavioral therapy? It is like my mind goes on auto pilot and I have to shop..but when I leave the store I am really upset with myself for what I have done...has anyone else experienced something like mine...? I need to know what I can do to help fix this ...I gave my credit cards to my dad to hold until I need them for gas or food,
I dont know what else if anything that Can be done.

Well they say that all the SSRI's are good for OCD but luvox SSRI and anafranil TCA is targeted for that. But is that the only thing you do compulsively as it kind of sounds like shopping makes you feel better and when done realize what you're done. I feel giving the cards to your Dad was a good start but something you might want to discuss in theraphy what do you think? Love Phillipa

My therapist is aware of my ability to spend, but it has never been severe..so we have kind of let it go...it still isnt severe, but it is enough to bother me. I will talk to him this week...

I have a problem with it. I never even seem to enjoy buying things. I obsess and obsess until I get tired and give in, and then I just feel bad.

We don't talk enough about it in therapy I guess.

What you describe is like an addiction. I think they have some shopping addiction self help groups. Check out your local gambling anonymous - they may have some contacts for you.
