well a couple of days ago I started therapy again. I f*ck*ng hate starting therapy. It just drags up all the old b*llsh*t over and over again. I'm not sure if I'm ready for this right now but I'm going to stick with it for at least 6 sessions to see how it goes, he seems nice enough, so lets just wait and see. I felt like crap after my first session, why do we have to put ourselves through this to supposedly get better. AAAARRRRRGGGGGHHHHHH

You sound or remind me of me as I go to a therapist and it's almost a burden to repeat the same stuff all over again. I do think for me anyway that CBT which I'm doing now is the answer for me. We do not discuss issues other than becoming more functional and upcoming surgery or meds. That's our relationship. Seen four in the last two years yet to find one where we click. Phillipa

Cactus, I hope you form a good match with your new therapist. Why did you decide to return to therapy?
I'm doing therapy for the first time but ended up telling my 'story' to several pdocs/therapists before actually commencing with therapy, which really upset me at the time - it does drag everything up and things did get worse before I felt helped. That said, I'm very glad I stuck with therapy and have a good match. I guess the rocky beginning is just a downside of the process. I hope you can stick with it and get a lot out of it. In the beginning, one of the other babblers told me to set a date and promise to myself to at least stick with the therapy until then - give it a chance - and that helped.
Good luck,
Witti

Hi Phillipa,
I'm sorry you haven't yet felt the benefits of the therapy. I had the feeling that CBT was meant to be short-term and brings more immediate results - could it be that you would be helped by two simultaneous approaches? Have you tried many different types of therapy? I did get some CBT advice from the first pdoc I saw (only in two sessions) and get some of that now from my current pdoc (although truth be told I'd rather he didn't!!). I see an analyst, so my therapy is at the complete opposite end of the spectrum I guess.
I suppose the question of benefits from therapy will depend on what you want to get out of therapy - what kind of changes do you hope for? Can the therapy bring about these changes? Have you been able to talk about your concerns with your T. It must be terribly frustrating. I things change for the better.
Take care,
Witti.

Thanks for answering I'm aging and having surgery not life threatening so have to find a new career as too old for floor nursing which I loved. I enjoy and benefit from trying to help others. Hence after many years on all the hospital floors chose psych. Very fulfilling to see a patient begin to get well. So the goal is the grieving of old job and I am creative so trying the ebay. Can do from home where I will be all winter. Gotta do something. No driving or excercising. Slugging the winter away. Phillipa

I can certainly relate. I was in therapy in the past and ended therapy in 1994. I was doing fine or so I thought. No depression, no meds, no therapy. Then boom; in 2005, sh*t happened, and I went back to therapy as old stuff from the past reared it's ugly head, stuff I had not fully dealt with. So, here I was all over again and with a therapist I liked but who was not right for me. Since May I have been with an analyst who I feel is the right person for me. In just six months we have made more progress (albeit painful as you say) than I did with the guy before him who pushed ECT and which I did. Do not despair. We are here for support. Therapy if it is really working is painful, and so it is important to be with someone you can feel is a good match especially if you are doing insight oriented more long-term therapy.

I've never had therapy before but my very good friend is a psycho therapist and he encourages me and gives me good advice. we never actually sat down and had a session where i told him all my problems, etc.... scared i would drive my friend away hehehe.
hey phillipa, how is the ebay thing going so far? so you have an online store? i've always wanted to start up an ebay store but don't know what to sell! i am a musician so i was thinking of possibly buying used instruments, fixing them up real nice and then re-selling. something to think about i guess.

Very well thank-you for asking just got through posting 5 new children's items. You'd do very well with the used musical stuff no need to fix up or if you are talented do and you will benefit greatly from it. What a wonderful way to use those instuments. Phillipa

Don't you wish you could just hand them a C.V. and say, "any questions?" instead of having to recite it all. (I think of it as disgorging.) Having to bring all those pieces back up that I'd had so nicely hidden for so long.
Here's hoping that you've got a thoughtful T who will listen carefully and speak wisely. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Cactus, I have been in therapy since I think April or Mar and it still feels new. I feel like we go over and over things. But I finally asked why as I thought she didn't remember but she said no some things she feels needs to be revisited until are dealt with completely. So it is a messy thing therapy is. I think of it as a hugh spring cleaning of my mind that has stuff in it from as early back as a two year old that I need to deal with so it will be a long haul. But I need to do this. good luck with yours......rk

(((Phillipa)))) You haven't done anything wrong. A lot of threads change subjects and all you were doing was answering her question. To me your response was more on subject, then WHY NOT JUST START YOUR OWN THREAD>>>>> JUST A SUGESTION>>>> But you responded more kindly to it then I would have. lol

> Why not start your own thread
There can be advantages to starting a new thread, but please be sensitive to the feelings of others.
But please don't take this personally, this doesn't mean I don't like you or think you're a bad person.
Follow-ups regarding these issues should be redirected to Psycho-Babble Administration.
Thanks,
