Suggestions from T

Posted by cricket on June 24, 2005, at 13:41:58

As I read a few threads, I am curious about some of the suggestions that Ts make.

Is it normal for a T to make concrete suggestions about your day to day life? Like how to raise your kids, manage your job, interact with your partner, etc.

My T has never really done this and I think that I would throttle him if he ever tried. Or worse yet, do just the opposite even though his suggestion might be perfectly valid.

Are concrete suggestions more for CBT oriented therapists? Just wondering because I want to make sure I avoid anything to do with that in the future.

Geez, if I wanted advice I'd ask a cab driver.

Sorry, I guess I'm in a pissy mood.

My T makes suggestions all the time, about how to handle certain people, how to handle marriage issues, family issues, etc. I welcome it though.

Hi cricket, don't worry about feeling p***y! I'm on the edge today, so I'm right there with you.

My T. is psychodynamically oriented, not CBT. I've been in CBT before, and this is worlds different.

The only time my T. has made concrete suggestions to me is when I was going through a highly hostile crisis situation at my job at the time. I can't go into the details of the situation (wish I could), but at the time he was making very concrete recommendations on ways I could protect myself and work with the people I had on my side, so they could help me. Plus steps to take so I wouldn't go completely out of control!

Besides this situation, everything else is dealt with super-psychodynamically. For me, it's a completely different way of thinking...I tend to be results-oriented, but oddly didn't get much from CBT. I think it was my old T.'s inexperience, but it ended up really turning me off of CBT.

I hope this helps. Take care.

My T is cognative therapist, he says he concentrates on cognative but not behavior therapy.( he said there is a difference in the two) But he uses all types for different situations.
The only thing my T actually told me to do is to keep me and my family completely away from my mother! He even said, he shouldn't tell me that, but he feel so strongly about it. It is funny because in the beginning of therapy he said he would follow my lead on what to do about my mother. I haven't seen her for over 5 years. But now that he knows a lot more, he said keep away from that devil!
My T guides me, but doesn't tell me what to do. He lets me decide how to live my life. He is so great!

That's good to hear Miss Honeychurch.

I guess it's partly about where you are in your life and how you view your T. My T's life is just too different from mine for him to have any ability to understand it, much less give advice.

Of course, there's also my resentment of authority figures :)

Hi spalding,

Nice to see you posting.

So it is more for CBT then. I guess my T is more psychodynamic too then, although he's never actually given me a label as to what he is.

I don't really get what cognitive is, but it sounds like he's doing exactly what's right for you.

And as far as staying away from your mother, that's not advice that's just caring on his part. That I would take from a T :)

Mine does all the time. He's a counselor, and CBT in orientation.

Sometimes he's right, sometimes wrong. Sometimes he's right but I think he's wrong. Over my best judgement on his advice I asked my boss about the plans for our company and found out my fears that there would be a buyout in the next five to ten years were justified. My husband says I can be as psychic as I want, but could I possibly start making more cheerful predictions?

Hmmm... mine has a CBT orientation but it's always very clear when we're planning some particular behavioral assignment, which is the only time it's at all like she's telling me what to do. And even then it's not like she says "You need to do X" and it feels like a command; rather, she suggests that a certain thing would be good and why, and I tell her how comfortable I am with the idea and maybe propose alternatives, etc. I don't think CBT necessarily means your T just tells you what to do, and you just do it.

I do bring up specific problems and she may offer suggestions, but they tend to be more along the lines of different ways of thinking about the problem than concrete courses of action. I suspect there's a lot more variation among therapists as to the degree to which they prescribe a course of action than there is among adherents of a particular mode of therapy compared to another mode.
