My son's play therapist wants to do family play therapy as well. My husband is not keen on the notion. But if he agrees, we might get to do sand table play.
I warned her that I'm not at *all* good at playing. :(
The idea makes me feel very self conscious, and like my husband, I wonder if she could actually tell anything about the real us under those circumstances. My husband says he'd be sure to be on his best behavior. :D
But she's worked wonders with my son. The original Gary Cooper clam. I never ever thought she'd break through to him. Yet a few short sessions later, he's a real pro and he's making real changes in how he handles things. Why can't I change that fast? It's not his age either. I went for a year at age 13 and didn't change an iota. Not really anyway.
I'm so proud of him. :)
If she can do what I thought was impossible there, she maybe could tell something about our dynamics watching us play.
I'm really not good at playing. :(

I'd like to learn more about sand therapy. I've heard of it and that about it. Keep me informed as to what transpires. I love it when things work in therapy!!!!

Sounds like a grand idea. I'm jealous. My daughter, 11, has been seeing a therapist for just over a year. And although we have seen improvements, some of her old behaviors are creeping back. UGH! And we (T, husband and I)
think that those raging females hormones may be at play. Double ugh!!Anyway, I would love an opportunity for her T to see the dynamics of the 4 of us (I have a younger son as well). Sounds like you could learn a lot from each other.
And maybe you'll discover you do like to play afterall. Sand table, water tables, play dough and crayons ... oh to be a kid. But I wouldn't want to go back. No way. Been there, done that.
Sorry to digress.

I will. I think it's more structured in the family environment than it is either for my son or for other adults.
I think our other choices are art projects or puppet shows.

I think I'll find it excruciating. :)
But I so admire a child therapist who tries to involve the family that I'm willing to play along.
She picked up the ball on the hint about my husband, and followed up on it with my son. And today, I guess I felt sorry for my husband and told her all the terrible dynamics on my end and all the wonderful things he does. :) I really do try to take care of others.
And I know that I do contribute to the problem.
My son sees the whole thing as another class, I think. He seems to be working hard on mastering it.

Sand table? Whats that? Is it like a sand pit but safer 'cause the little kids don't pee in it???
Wow. I wish I got to play in therapy.
I wish I got therapy... But I digress...
I think I'd probably feel a bit self-conscious about it too. But it might be fun. Really. But puppets. Hmm. I'd stay away from them.

He's not keen.
He's also back to using startling as a disciplinary tool.
It's hopeless.
