Hi, I have been seeing pdocs for years, but today i have my first appt. with a therapist who supposidly specializes in anxiety issues and phobias. I am a little nervous, because my pdoc doesnt really talk to me much other than how are my meds...So, I wonder what is suppose to happen with this guy today? Anyone have any suggestions on how i should handle this.?
Thanks

Nervous is natural in a new situation and meeting a new person.
The first meeting is usually atrociously boring as they don't know anything about you, and it's mainly history taking that they need for future sessions. You might get to address one or two of your concerns. But it's mainly "What brings you to therapy" or "What have you tried in the past to help you with your anxiety, and how did it work" and maybe some questions about your life satisfaction and circumstances.
Just don't forget that this is a good time to size your therapist up and get some information on whether it will be a good match for you. Naturally, it's probably impossible to determine if it's a good match on first meeting, but it might be easier to decide if it's a dreadful match.
And if you think of the meeting as one where you get to check her out, you might feel less self conscious. :)
Good luck, and tell us how it goes!

PLease update us on how it goes!
I know after my first session with my current T I felt more hopeful and light of spirit than I had in years.

Hi and Welcome -
My message is probably late, but just wanted to let you know that I felt relief after the first session - finally someone to listen to me.
Of course, that was after my initial anxiety. But a good T will help you through this, and like a poster above also said, it's a time that you can also judge (bad word choice there) the T ... it it's going to be a good fit or not for YOU. Good Luck.

I don't blame you a bit for being afraid! It's the unknown ...
Let us know how it went. Are you still scared now that you've seen this person? What was s/he like?

Hi All, thanks for your support. I did see him and it went well. He is going to do this thing called biofeedback next week, where he hooks me up to all kinds of monitors and gives me stressor questions to see how my body reacts to it..Then we are going to start CBT. He seems confident that he can help me with my anxiety and eventually get off my benzo's....I'll keep ya'll updated..
Thanks
Sandy

Sandy,
That's great! CBT has done wonders for my depression and anxiety and I have done it without medication. Congratulations!
