Is this the right forum for therapy option discuss

Posted by EtktRide on April 22, 2004, at 1:31:41

I am curious if anyone has had the experience of feeling like their therapist has no suggestions for you on how to improve? I have ahd as much reflective listening as I can take.

Hi, welcome and YES it is :) My T offers ideas and suggestions and isnt just a reflective listener...maybe you need a different T or ask your T if he/she works in more than that way?

EtktRide,

I've asked my T to provide more constructive feedback from time to time. Of course, we have to analyze why I want that from him, but then sometimes he does get a little more concrete with me.

What orientation is your T?

Take care,

Well, I'm doing a resource/solutions-oriented systems therapy. There's practically no reflective listening. Let me know if you'd like more info on that. Of course, I'm miffed at the face-to-face shrink (it's in a training institute and she has a "reflecting team" that observes the sessions, plus it's on video) right now, as well as at the institute for some paperwork baloney, but I've had great results with the approach.

I'm not sure I have the same problem you have, but yes, at nine years into therapy, I sometimes feel my therapist has exhausted the positive action ideas he has about me. :) Now it seems that the conversation is a lot of reminding me that that's how I am, or suggestions that things could be different without a whole lot of guidance on how to get from a to b.

Have you discussed this with your therapist? It could possibly be that your therapist is waiting for the ideas about what is wrong and what could be changed to come from you. Or perhaps they have some other theory of change that is driving their style. Or maybe that's just what they do, and don't really have a plan behind it. But it would be interesting to find out.

I do think it's possible, though, that different types of therapy are right for the same person at different points in their journey. Depending on how flexible your therapist is, that may or may not involve a different therapist. How attached are you to this one? If you're really attached, seeing if she/he has a wider repertoire when you express the desire for a different approach might be the way to go.

Yes, I have had that. Then, I just out right asked what are they thinking. Some of this maybe, your therapist's personality. I know that mine explained her personality type to me and things made more sense.

Does the t give you feedback if you ask?
