I am new here, and am dually diagnosed with the above disorders. I am looking for any information, studies, etc.. on the combination of MDDP and alcoholism. I believe they are related. I have been treated for MDDP for 17 months, and have been sober for roughly the same amount of time. The depression predates my drinking; psychotic breaks have continued well into sobriety. Thanks in advance for any info. n.

When I am mystified by the world, I admit I look outside myself for the answers, only to find time and time again, I've always had the answer, or the path to it, inside.
I now ask the questions:
1. What do I want?
2. Can I draw a picture of what I want?
3. Can I suspend my feelings and my grumblings for 24 hours and still know what I want?Seems too simple! Seems that way until you try to suspend your feelings and your grumblings for any period of time. Five minutes can feel toooo long! What you are left with is something we are all born with. It took 12 to 13 years for our genetic clocks to trigger it's emergence. I'm talking about logic and true deductive reasoning.
Till then, we reason with "if-then". After we start experimenting with logic, we can reason by ganging "ifs" together, and come up with one conclusion; "if and if or if-then".
We are then a person! We are not alone, but we can act and think independently. Ever wonder why Realtors don't try to sell houses to kids? It's not against the law. I'ts just somewhere between unwise and real-dumb to do it. Besides if parents are busy doing their job of helping the kid survive to age 16 to 18, kids won't need to buy a house.
When we accept ourselves as a person, with skills and power and strength, we will know we are enough to take on the world on its own terms, or we'll recognize who to call when we can't do it by ourselves, alone. Doubt and despair will be extinguished. Depression (anger turned inward) will need no chemicals.
That's what I've learned....

Welcome! I have never heard of mddp, can you tell me what it stands for? Did you have the depression while drinking and were you a heavy drinker? I am not being nosy. I am wondering if the alcohol triggered the psychosis and the depression. Hope you are getting on your feet. terrics

MDDP is short for Major Depressive Disorder (Psychotic). It is also known as Major Depression with Psychotic Features, or just plain psychotic depression. My depression and psychoses both pre-date the onset of my drinking, as does certain behaviors which are readily identified as being those of an alcoholic. It is clear to me that both my depression and my alcoholism are closely related and must be treated together. Currently the psychotic depression is treated with anti-depressants, an anti-psychotic and a mood stabilizer. My alcoholism is treated with A.A.
I am seeking literature, studies, etc.. on persons with both diseases together. There is much on psychotic depression, and also much on alcoholism, but hardly anything on persons having both.
As you pointed out, alcoholism leads to psychosis and depression, and is a cause of both. 17 months sober seems a long time to be psychotic still, hence my dual-diagnosis.
Thanks very much for responding, n.
