Effexor Withdrawl -- will it ever stop?!

Posted by crazyjen on March 20, 2007, at 16:02:32

I actually feel like I'm going crazy trying to get off of this stuff. I've tried several times and I just can't do it. I feel like I need to take a month off of work so I can "get better".

Are there any doctors out there that actually acknowledge the fact that this is near impossible to get off of? I actually would like to go to a 30 day treatment center to do this. Everyone around me thinks I'm crazy as well!

Is there really any help out there?

i'm sorry you're feeling crazy right now. i'm kk and i feel crazy about half the time. ok, about 2/3 the time, really.

welcome to babbleworld! or, babbleland. or, disneyland on effexor withdrawals, if you prefer? i've found this site to be so very helpful. there is a meds page with a whole lot of good peopel with helpful advice too (whoel type better than me too :)

i've been aroudn here for quite a while (hey, and that baby duckie you see when you open the page is my baby! isn't he jstu the cutest thing ever???? of course, you know you must say yes!

i hope you find the info and support you have come lookign for. i typically stick to social (tend to stay away from politics :), so if you're in that area, send me a 'hey' and i'll reply back to you dear.

but, you may want to post this on the regular old meds board dear, as they'll be more suited to help you out with some relief aids. i'd say 'pop some klonopins' but i'm a pill head :)

take care of yourself and hope to see you around,
kk

of course, i'll reply to a post here as well! not to guilt you into a reply or anything, but if say you were bored or soemethign and felt like replying, id be mroe than happy to reply back!

again, take care darling! and i do hope you find some relief.

Thanks for the reply - I will definitely post this in the med area (if I can find it).

I do take klonipin but it only helps so much and I'm not sure if I'd be able to get much work done, ya know. :)

Cute lil duckie by the way.

=)

thanks for the reply!

the meds board is just plain old psychobabble (me thinks). there are a whole lot of smart people there and they're usually ready, willing and able to help with withdrawal and any med questions you have.

yeah, after i've been taking the klonopin for a while, i'm used to it now. but, i don't take it liek i'm supposed to (believe it or not, esp since i'm a self-proclaimed pill head, i take less than im supposed to, even though the dr's keep telling me to take it 2x a day.)

yes, and i know, that duckie is just so cute. and no, the typing has nothing to do with klonipin (though i've had half of one this morning! i'm feelign a bit amped!) but, thank you for saying so. he is such a joy and always os full of smiles (except when getting his shots of course. the dr actually made the comment that he HAD to see the shot, because he'd never seen this child cry before and just had to see it for once). and the teething too. ok, so he does cry, but rarely.

but, i find the klonopin helps me get some things done. slows the mind enough to get work done, you know? keeps my mind from thinking too much, so i can work. make sense? probably not, i rarely make sense to myself.

you hang in there, ok? withdrawals stink, but i'l give you a wink. perhaps a pinch, with an iron wrench (yummy sounding, huh?).

take care,
kk

i have a sister named jen. she certainly is crazy, but not on effexor. almost was afraid to reply to you, wouldn't want her to know what's really going on in my head, or my life (because even though i can't keep a secret i can keep my own, to a certain extent!)

Karen, this is GeorgeJ a new member as of 4/9/07.
I am a pharmacist that suffers from depression and had the experience of being on Effexor. Felt like the world was coming to an end. If the withdrawal problems continue, ask your doctor to prescribe 1 dose of Prozac 20mg. Prozac hangs around the body for weeks and will conteract the bad effects of Effexor. I did this and within 2 days the withdrawal problems were gone. I wish you the best.

Hi GeorgeJ -- nice to see a pharmacist around here. You know you're stuff!

I'm currently weaning myself off of Effexor. I've gone down from 300 mg to 112.5. I just saw my doctor last week and he said the same thing. He gave me a script for prozac if I can't handle the withdrawl symptoms ...... and explained it the same way.

Just curious -- how long did it take you to wean off?

Thanks!
CJ

Hi Everyone,

Let me tell you about MY experience with Effexor. I have been taking it for just under a year and currently I swallow 300 mg/day.

I have had absoluely NO side effects with this med. Furthermore, I went on vacation and ran out (not so smart) so I stopped "cold turkey". There were NO (repeat NO) withdrawl symptoms of any kind and I was off the med for two entire weeks.

Effexor is the only anti-depressant that has ever helped me. And I have tried afew including amitryptiline, Prozac, Paxil, Welburtrin and Remeron. In fact, Effexor is the only anti-depresssant that I can "feel" at all.

From my standpoint, this is a wonderful medicine. It's been a true miracle for me. I declined Effexor in the past largely due to the scare stories I read on this site (Psycho-Babble by Dr. Bob). The decision I made to take Effexor was one of the best choices I've ever made. It's true that no two people react the same way to a med. But I believe (and this is just a guess that some will think naive) that the majority of people react as I did, with few or no side effects. Otherwise, how could this med survive? You can't get people hooked and enduring "brain shocks" and remain on the market.

Good Luck to Everuone!

Hi, I was on Effexor for more than a year, on about the highest dose I was allowed, I think. I found it did absolutely nothing for my depression (but then, mine is entirely reactionary, not clinical/ chemical), and took myself off it when I read that it could cause tiredness, something that I was really battling every minute of every day. I took myself down VERY slowly, leaving the night meds as they always had been, I started reducing the lunch meds by half, then half again, then off, I then started the same with my breakfast meds, until they, too, were completely off. I tackled the night dosage the same way. Each time I reduced the dose, I would take the new dosage for about a week, so that I got used to it. I got no withdrawal symptoms, but, then, since I was getting no positive benefit, that is probably why.

Welcome! I'm glad you didn't have to go through any withdrawal. If it isn't too much trouble, more people might learn from the above if you repost it to the Withdrawal board:

Thanks,
