I am a 25 yof who was just diagnosed with type two bipolar disorder this past Friday. I was wondering how other people with this deal with the "stigma" of being BIPOLAR.

Hi, ebee. Welcome to Psychobabble.

How did you come to be diagnosed? Are you feeling better/all right?

The best way to deal with the stigma, is to figure out more about it.

Where is the stigma coming from? Is it something you feel or believe? Something you fear others may believe?

What are the elements of it? What's bad about BP II? specifically, that is. (Not to say that any emotional trouble is good, but that each of us has our own particular reactions and patterns, even within a "diagnosis")

I personally believe that you are you. "You" are not BPII, or even "a person with BPII"-- BPII, and the stigma associated with it, ultimately have little to do with you, as you--even if you "have" it.

There are books, by the way, that claim that many of the greatest poets, painters, and other creative people had BP, that this was linked to their creativity. If I have a chance later today, I'll find a link for you to one of them on Amazon.

There are many ways of accepting, and even seeing some good in, BPII.

Also there are people here who have that diagnosis. Each one is different, and a valuable part of Babble.

Hope this helps a little.

Jost
