losing therapist

Posted by survivor1 on January 14, 2006, at 11:34:04

Hi, I'm brand new here. I'm losing my therapist because I'm being forced to change insurance for financial reasons. Since I found out, I've been really off the wall. Crying jags, losing my temper, etc. Any advice?

Hello, I'm sorry to hear about your therapist situation. On the psychology board there are some really supportive people who discuss their therapists and therapy. If you haven't been there yet you should check it out.

I'm kind of new myself, but I wanted to welcome you. this is a good place.

I think what you're feeling is pretty normal. It's like losing any important relationship in your life.

I recently thought I had lost my therapist, although now things may work out. It was comparable to when my father died.

I don't want to redirect your post without your permission, but I know you'll find a lot of empathy on the Psychology Board.

Thanks for responding back so quickly, I really needed that. I am supposed to go to my second transition appt. with my therapist that I'm leaving. I don't want to go, it's too painful. I don't really know why I should go. It's like breaking up with someone but going on a date with them anyway for transition, sounds stupid feels stupid.

It might still feel stupid after you do it, but speaking as someone who never does things like that, I bet you will be glad you did the "right" thing. Even if it is other people who think it's right.

I'm the worst at therapy. I've ended every therapy relationship by cancelling an appointment and never coming back. That's the exact opposite of what you're doing, and your way has to be healthier.

If it feels painful, it might be something it is better to talk out than to brood over.

Wishing you the best,

James k

Thank you so much, that was so sweet. I really needed to hear that. I had one of my transition appointments today with my soon to be ex-therapist and decided I had to do it over the phone. I just couldn't handle it in person. I really think it helped. I actually talked about leaving! Which I didn't think was possible. Thank you so much again.
