Summer Seasonal Disorder

Posted by Parveen on April 6, 2005, at 10:48:12

Hello, my name is Parveen. For years I have been depressed and dread the coming of summer. I was not aware that there were others out there like me. People thought I was crazy for hating summer.
Can any one tell me what is wrong with me?

Hello. Pleased to meet you and welcome to Babble :-)
I have posted a copy of your post over on the social board because you are likely to get more responses from over there. Here is a link to the copy of your post:

I haven't heard of summer seasonal affective disorder before - but I have indeed heard of the winter variety.

Do you have any allergies or anything that happen around the start of summer?
Any bad experiences or nasty stuff that you associate with summer? (aside from the depression itself - of course)
Are you on any medication to try to prevent the depression?

I get depressed sometimes. But it is more likely to be a winter thing for me.

I have learned a bit about how I usually get depressed in response (an extreme one to be sure) to stuff that is going on in my environment. Thats why I ask whether there may be stuff going on for you over summer that may be stressful or whatever that might not be an issue for you at other times. Or whether there are bad associations with summer for you.

Anyways.... That was a bit of a ramble (sorry sorry). But welcome to Babble. I hope you like it here :-)

Hello Alexandria,
thanks for answering me. Well I do have allergies
but I don't think that's why I hate summer. I have put on weight over the years and perhaps I feel like everyone else is out there having fun and I'm too heavy to join in the fun because I can't fit into my clothes. But in general summer has always made me depressed. No I am not on any anti-depressents. My doctor suggested it but I refuse to go on it because I feel I can make due without it. I dread the summer months!!

Welcome Parveen,
I hate summer clothes, too. I've gained weight over the last year, and I hate to see what I look like in shorts and such. And I don't like to sweat. I have heard of a kind of reverse seasonal disorder. I don't know much about it, though. I believe someone posted about it on the alternative board or maybe it was the meds board. You might go exploring there if you have time.

Also, everyone needs to make their own decision about medications, but I can tell you from my own experience, it's very hard to try to cope on your own. Depression does have biological components. Sometimes a low dose of the right antidepressant can make a huge difference. And it doesn't necessarily mean you need to be on them forever. There is also counseling as an option. Studies show both options can help, and actually doing both together for a period of time can be quite effective.

Just had to put my two cents in.

Welcome to Babble,

gg
