Augmentin and Yasmin Question

Posted by Wildflower on October 28, 2006, at 12:05:05

I know that antibiotics lessen the effect of birth control but I need to know if this is true even if you're on the week of BC pills that do not contain hormones.

How long does Augmentin stay in your system? Will it affect my BC even if I stop taking it when I start my pills that actually contain hormones? Is it possible to take two BC pills a day just to be sure things stay on track?

This is the reason that I hate taking antibiotics. It wreacks havoc on my cycle.

Don't some antibiotics stop BC pills from working? I think my Daughter told me that. Love Phillipa ps call you OB-GYN and ask her/him.

Hi Wildflower- I don't know what kind of drug Augmentin is, so I have nothing good to add on THAT topic

Just a question- are you annoyed that antibiotics lessen the contraceptive effects of birth control? This is a really big deal! Use condoms. Better safe than sorry.

or, maybe you're annoyed that the antibiotics cause cycle irregularities like missed periods or breakthrough bleeding? Annoying, yes. I'm sorry you're going through that. If it's really heavy or chronic, you should probably make sure you're eating enough red meat and poultry for iron.

I found that when my cycle gets disrupted, it's usually about 30-60 days to get back on track. Every woman's body is different.

Here's another cool factoid- if you're around other women a lot (and NOT on birthcontrol) you can effect each other's cycles a LOT. The general trend is that all the women not on birthcontrol pills tend to synchonize their cycles, perhaps to the woman who IS on bc. I always appreciate having "regular" roommates or spending a lot of time with one or more women who is more regular than I am. Funny, huh? stress, depression etc- makes me out of whack too.

hope you feel better soon.

Augmentin and Yasmin Question I forgot something

Oh- I forgot one thing- don't adjust your dose of birthcontrol. doubling up on the active pills increases the risk of serious side effects like blood clots, and if you're not consistent about 3 weeks on 1 week off (or whatever your pack does) you will be throwing your body further out of whack. just keep things consistent.

A lot of women choose NOT to have a period every 30 days simply by never taking their 1 week of placebo pills. It may work, but it takes your body a few cycles to adjust. you may have spotting. Talk to your gyno about this. It's VERY common!

So have you ever lived with gals and your cycles all became the same or something? I always thought that this was bit of an urban myth. I've lived with various roommates etc and I'm currently living with two gal flatmates at the mo, and I can't say i've noticed any synchroninity in our cycles...past or present!

Kind regards

Meri

Yep- I've noticed this. I tend to be the one who synchronizes with other people.

Definitely not an urban myth. When I'm feeling more ambitious, I'll try to link you to the research.

You may just not be sensitive to other women's pheromones, or they may not be sending out signals. I forget what the mechanism is, but I believe that it's an airborne steroid-like chemical.

I'm the alpha female in my place, like when I rent out the 2nd bedroom to another student.
