I'm different than I was before therapy

1) I have more self-esteem
2) I'm better at accepting compliments
3) I have a better relationship with my h
4) I have lots of pills to take everyday
5) I am wiser about myself
6) I am able to respond to others with more compassion
7) I know what I want to do for the next 5 years, and maybe the next 5 years after that
8) I like myself more than I used to
9) I am learning which things are worth fighting for and which things are better ignored
10) I am learning how to fix the things I can control
11) and dismiss those things I cannot control
12) and learning to control things with a light easy touch, rather than a brutish shove
13) my temper is not so volatile
14) I am not depressed at the moment
15) I have more friends
16) I am not regressing back to my childhood as often
17) I only get flashbacks and depersonalization every once in a while, not as often as before
18) I learned why I get scared easily
19) I am learning to process the past and to look toward the future
20) I met CS and KK

llurpy! not nice. you only mentioned kk and CS. you also got to meet deneb* and happyflower, and jammerlich, and Dr. Bob and Toph and thuso. That makes...8! 8 people I would not have had the GUTS to meet before therapy.

Hey L ...

Was your therapy 'the old type' or 'the new type'?

Once upon a time it was thought that talking about our problems was the answer. There is a proper term for this type of therapy .. maybe you know it .. I can't think of it.

Now, well in my experience in the last nearly-10yrs, it is all about learning skills to push the problem away or in or somewhere .. anywhere but in your thoughts. For this too there is a proper term.(?)

I only get to see my therapist about every 2 to 2-1/2 weeks and sometimes for only 30min. I know this isn't helping very much. I can only site about one particular helpful session over two years. My therapist is supposed to be trained in DBT.

I followed the post from Admin over here to see what was happening and 'your list' is so good .. think I'll print and keep discreetly.

uh oh? I left a trace on admin? Been trying to avoid that place!!!

I've been to 3 therapists.

1.the first one was problem-solving oriented once a week for 40 minutes

He and I worked on specific cognitive distortions and solutions to difficult interactions that I was having at work/school.

2. psychoanalytically minded talk therapist. we talked through major traumatic episodes. it was really really hard work. she also supported me when I was finishing up my diss. basically, the idea was for me to learn to forgive myself for the things that happened to me when I had no control because I was a wee one. she was extremely empathetic, kind and gentle. she could still be firm though, like when she "forced" me to get a cat due to my mouse phobia

3. currenT. I used to call him quieT, but now he's turned into a more charismaticT. He will not allow me to turn to him for easy solutions. He will support me as I do my own thing, but when I whine a little bit like "I can't lose weight" he will look at me and say something maddening like "you will have to eat less". grrrr! but he has been able to see me improve and he has a great way of reminding me of my strengths. he's been able to help me get past my terror of men. now it's been diminished to a slight hesitation. His focus on reality has helped my dissociative episodes too. Focus is on talk, and lots of Freudian stuff has been analysed too. yay... groan...

Tks for explaining as it gives me an idea of 'what I should have had'. It's been a long time since something bad happened and still I think 'I am bad'. I can sort of see what kind of therapy I think I missed out on, which may have helped me.
