COPING DURING THANKSGIVING...

Posted by Augustina on November 18, 2005, at 17:19:02

With the holiday approaching, food has been on my brain even more. Right now, I'm in the restrictive,"need to lose weight" mode in order to allow myself a little leeway in Thanksgiving dinner festivities. I'm a little frightened with all the food that will be so readily available next week and in the upcoming weeks leading to Christmas. I'm strategizing within myself on how I'm going to handle it.
How do you guys deal with food and the holidays?

I allow myself to eat what I want as long as I don't go for all the bad stuff. I try to stick to the veggies and dip, and that sort of stuff. It's hard tho.

We're not having Thanksgiving this year...

My mother, who usually does the whole holiday meal thing, has been invited to speak at an event in Germany that day, the rest of the family is heading elsewhere, so hubby and I will be at home, probably watching reruns and eating the same thing we always eat.

Other years, though, I've mostly handled it by thinking ahead of what I will feel safe eating -- easy to do, since we have the same menu every year -- and then eating that. Some years it's harder than others, and those years I'll often come to the point of saying things like, "OK, I'll eat four pearl onions..." Mostly, though, it's just "red cabbage, onions, 1/2 cup stuffing, etc." Without too much in the way of obsessive serving planning.

For overeating, which is less of a problem for me, I guess I try to relax, drink water, and if I snack, I try to take a "portion" of snack food, and not nibble from the serving plate. That usually helps me, since it's a predetermined amount. I hope that makes sense?

Hope something there helps someone.

Yes, thanks, this does help me. Like a lot of other people, this coming week will be a challenge for me food-wise. We have a Thanksgiving potluck at work (my bosses bright idea) on Tuesday and I know there will be a ton of food to deal with there. I am strategizing like crazy and it's making me dizzy.
I think the key for me is to just put what I really want to eat on my plate and leave the vicinity of the food area.
Ditto for Thursday.

hi, i'm glad you joined in.
it's good that you'll be in a safe environment with your immediately family for Thanksgiving. I spent last Thanksgiving alone at home, eating take out Chinese food b/c i didn't want to spend it w/my relatives. This year though, I'll be seeing everyone again. I'm hoping to get through this holiday w/out feeling guilty or gluttinous.
